Race Evaluation

Mt Tom: Red

cmorse

1. through parking lot to bend in road, uphill to main road, then up to trail junction and up from there
2. +04:30east to knoll, the below the green, across the stream and right up to the knoll - only no bag visible, crap.... Figured this knoll might not have been mapped so tried higher, eventuall realizing everything was matching what should have been above the control, so came back down and found the control stand and flag lying on the ground - stuck it back into the rocky ground, punched - demoralizing as I had run a nice line and spiked the feature.
3. straight, above the logging, once across stream headed up the promient reentrant, above the long knoll and then right down and in.
4. +04:30not sure why I convinced myself I didn't want to lose any elevation and was focusing on the larger boulder near the edge of the circle, hunted around in the cliffs for a bit before realizing I was looking for the tiny blip in the middle of the circle, came down and around and found it
5. couldn't find a clean line, climbed right of the stony ground and cliffs (slow) but then turned SW and nailed it. Accurate route, just not terribly speedy
6. +02:00downhill through nice open woods, pretty much following PG's route but toward the end I ended up going straight thinking the narrow knoll was the broader one on Peter's route. Wound up on the spur S of the control scratching my head for a minute (there was a knoll on the spur which kind of 'made sense'), then headed uphill to hit control
7. pretty straight, just L of line, until stream before control, up N of the cliffs and in..
8. +01:00was a bit farther W than I thought I was in the green after crossing road, came under the cliff N of circle, then across top of large reentrant before turning into center of circle
9. SW above cliff, then contoured around reentrant and right in
10. nice running on top of ridge, R of line, across W end of pond and right in
11. trying to shake someone on my tail I bolted straight downhill out of the control, then ran along the edge of the reentrant/stony ground to the reentrant junction and followed a steady bearing from there. Solid, but passed by my shadow who ran off to investigate a couple other rocks further up the hill which I steadily bypassed knowing I needed to go further down the hill. But my shadow (don't know his name, british accent) beat me to it.
12. steady running on bearing and nailed it
13. more steady running on bearing, recognized broader spur and right in
14. not sure why I wound up choosing a route further uphill than optimal, my shadow visible ahead (maybe I opted for uphill to get away from him?) Hit the trail fine but then promptly lost that elevation going downhill on trail - just not a smart route choice. On trails all the way to clearing, gaining some ground on my shadow who tripped crossing the trail and I got ahead of him to the bag
F. around the lake and in, not sure if flag in front of building was finish, but made for it anyway hoping the epunch box said finish on it - which it did... Fine day in the woods
