Race Evaluation

US Champs: Day 2 Blue

1. These are my actual splits from the race, but I have them in as a re-run because I was DSQ for missing control #9.
2.
3.
4.
5. Missed slightly to the right.
6.
7.
8.
9. Everything had been going pretty smoothly up to this point. When I crossed the trail. I thought that it was odd that the trail wasn't on the map, because it looked reasonably distinct (in fact, it was the trail where I had seen a guy with loppers trimming weeds the day before). The problem was that I was looking at the leg from 9 to 10. After crossing the trail, I couldn't get anything to match up. I went by a bunch of water jugs with no control, that I suspect was #4 from the previous day, which would mean that I was within 150 m of the control. I decided to not waste any time, and bail out to the road. Had I decided to bail to the stream, I might have stumbled across the control, but instead I thrashed my way though a bunch of thick stuff. And I never went to #9, but didn't realize it until I downloaded.
10. Attacking from the road, I had a sweet route to this control.
11. Very vague terrain on the approach, but I spiked this.
12. NE to the road, and headed into the woods just after the bend. I had intended to use #3 as an attack point, but I was too far right and lost contact briefly, but I kept going forward, figured it out, and spiked the control.
13.
14. Wil Smith overtook me, and disappeared when I paused to drink.
15. Straight to the trail, turned right, cut the corner to the other trail, and attacked down the reentrant.
16. Running the broad spur, I was doing great until I was about 80% of the way there and I just spaced out and wasn't sure where I was. I optimistically checked a couple of rootstocks, then saw a side reentrant in the big reentrant on my left, and realized I was directly north of the control. No trouble from there.
17. Wyatt overtook me here.
18.
19. Just blasting on compass to the river. Hit the big reentrant and took the trail.
20. Mandatory crossing? I didn't know anything about a mandatory crossing. No, I didn't read the meet notes. And the marking on the map was totally inadequate. I hear there were streamers, but they didn't do much for me either. So I just headed along the river, and crosed at a perfectly adequate spot at the bend. So that's a second reason to disqualify me. We could probably come up with a third reason if we tried.
21.
F. Not too smooth a job finding the finish.
