Race Evaluation

Susquehanna Stumble: Long Stumble

Tundra/Desert

1. Roll, train, roll. Steam away. Eddie as the last car? Not for long.
2.
3.
4. A somewhat puzzled J-J: a rare sight.
5. With Ross and Dan W.
6. Leaving B, I can see Matthias almost at A. A tad over a minute. Ross goes wide.
7. Found Eddie at half-way leg point.
8. Eddie pulling away. Last time I see Matthias, way ahead.
9. A bit wide, Eddie even wider.
10. (9-G) Decided to do GHFI. Reason: I thought I could get low 5 min/km if I pushed FI, which would compensate for the extra length on FI vs. HI. As I ran the trail on 9-G, I realized that not having three seats to myself on the redeye was going to do me in.
11. (G-H) At H, I see Vytenis in the lead (500 m or so ahead of myself).
12. (H-F) Coming up to F, I gradually encounter the rest of the train doing F-H. I only recall Randy, then Ted Good, but there were more ahead of him. (My concentration was fairly good, I reason now, because I only vaguely remember other people on the course and the moments they appeared/disappeared.)
13. (F-I) At F, I team up with Nadim. Tim Good is ahead of everyone. The beginning of the leg was slow because Tim (or was it Dan W?) led the lemmings off the trail. Nadim and Tim go to G, I move on to I. At I, I meet Neil the Irish guy.
14. Nadim catches up as I drink.
15.
16.
17. Bad compass work
+00:20
Went a bit low. Nadim, Neil, and a purple guy caught up.
18. The bathroom stunk. The purple guy has no map.
19. With Neil.
20. With Neil. Found P on the way and was sure it would be on the second loop. Thought about punching it ;-+=)("><
21. Two banana pieces. Eddie stays there so I realize he's only doing short. Nadim catches up.
22. Bad compass work
+00:20
With Nadim, we both went wide right, recovering on the E-W trail 100 m W of the main road.
23.
24.
25.
26. Spent most of the trail run figuring out the P..S order, changing the plan several times. Nadim still with me. I made the final [which I now think is the best] decision immediately after leaving #24.
27. (24-Q) I thought that I could follow a trail most of the way to Q, since the green was no longer serious. The trail was no longer serious, either, however. Nadim went to P. At Q, I find Alexei, a control ahead of me.
28. (Q-P) Met Randy halfway to P (half a control ahead?) Approaching P, I see Nadim off to the left. I think he's still looking for P. [He found P without problems but had trouble right away on P-Q.] I'm now a control ahead of him.
29. Bad distance judgement
+01:10
(P-R) Went wide right to avoid the green, so approached R over a hill. Did not see the bag in a distance, so went along the E slope of the hill 90 m too far S. Stopped, looked around, saw the bag.
30. (R-S) Saw Neil halfway to S. Even, I think. I feel like I can have a chance to push and maybe catch the people I know are not too far ahead: Randy and Alexei.
31.
32.
33.
34. As I leave V, I see Alexei going up to it, slightly less than a minute behind.
35. Leaving W, Alexei still is about a minute behind.
36.
37. No sight or sound of Alexei, or of anyone ahead. I take it easy.
F. Saw someone way ahead but it probably was a Yellow runner on a trail. I finish, Alexei comes in about 20 seconds later.
