Race Evaluation

BOK: Raven Rock, Day 2: Blue

jjcote

1. Started out with a bang: drifted waaaay left, must have run right past #12, and hit the trail. Recovered okay, but I was a long way off the line.
2. Started out going too much north. Had to look around a little for the ditch in the flat area.
3. Deadfall deadfall deadfall deadfall deadfall... where the heck am I? Okay, now where's the ditch? Saw Guy Olsen (on Red), and was very discouraged, since I believed I had the first start (Guy actually started 10 minutes before me).
4.
5. Deadfall deadfall deadfall deadfall deadfall... had a hell of a time getting through, but at least I knew where I was.
6. Very tough getting through all the deadfall to the floodplain (went left of the cliffs), and found Guy down there. Made pretty good time, right on the purple line, though when I got to the control, my thumb had slipped to #7, and I almost didn't even look at the code, since it didn't look line my feature.
7. Bumped my watch on this leg and stopped it -- this watch can't be restarted without clearing. Bummer.
8. North to field, then west (cutting the corner), followed trail then up the spur.
9. The green here wasn't as bad as the map suggested.
10. Up to the imaginary trail, cut through the top of the reentrant, and headed into the reentrant to the SW of the one I wanted, which provided a nice clean approach.
11. Took the shortest route out to the trail, which turned out to be terrible, much worse than the map suggested. Too much deadfall. From trail junction, stayed just below the lip of the plateau to stay in the white woods.
12. Directly to trail, cut the last corner, and straight in.
13. NW to hit the middle part of the orchard. When leaving the field, was almost overcome by the foul reek of the canine corpse.
14.
15.
F. No elephant tracks yet, and I couldn't see the streamers, but got through the woods okay.
