Boulder Dash 2007: Red Day 2

cmorse

1. +00:20up the hill, just L of the cliffs on bearing, down reentrant then across trail to follow E side of marsh running in the firmer parts of marsh. Slightly off to W but corrected reasonably quickly
2. +10:00this sucked. quickly across road and uphill, apparently just on the W edge of circle, and not finding a boulder when I got there, started looking at reasonable sized boulders, relocated a bunch of times from above and below and always kept coming back to the same (wrong) boulders. When I eventually found it (lured by others which I was trying to ignore) it seemed an awful pitiful sized boulder not really worthy of being on the map. 10 minutes gone already and no hope of retaining my 3rd place in M45. Hard to motivate the rest of the run from here.
3. +01:00slow and careful. Hit control just fine, but crept along really slowly so as not to lose another 10 minutes
4. +00:30drifted slightly S on the climb and investigated a couple other knolls (not all mapped) before correcting
5. +00:15straight, but went around W side of small hill so came in from the W
6. +03:00L of line, checking features enroute, doing just fine, along NE side of marsh about 2/3 of the way along, hit veg boundary ok though thought perhaps that should have been rough open, then somehow got a little L and checked out some unmapped knolls a couple lines too low, then eventually climbed up but had overshot and was now on knoll SE and below where a bunch of folks were searching, but realized where I was promptly and proceeded to drag them up the hill to the flag
7. +01:00got a bit right and checked some unmapped rock (but bigger than the boulder at #2), then turned L and up the hill.
8. out to trails, then R on dirt road, then L on trail, cut into woods at gate past horseshoe marsh, over NW spur and down passing Sharon who was searching and grumbling, said 'higher' and then proceeded to spike it. Best feeling I'd had all day
9. Feeling good about a spike where Sharon had been floundering and having plenty of energy from taking the first half of the course at a slower, cautionary pace I took off from the contrl, between the marshes straight through the green with various unidentified folks to my right and left doing roughly the same thing, hit the trail right at the marsh and around on hill contours - a number of my train went R of the knoll past marsh - another spike
10. screaming downhill to trail, along trail then at small marsh which had standing water so it was a fast wade, spike again...
11. +00:30down to water control now in a group of 4-5 unknown orienteers, along a trail in clearing that I didn't see, in at veg corner, dodging various debris, got sucked a little high by the crowd who had passed me but dropped down bringing them with me.
12. beeline for the powerline, cross marsh then trail cutting in before I saw waterstop, not too trashy and fast pace to the control
13. L of line in cleaner woods, up hill, down spur and into reentrant bringing up the tail of the pack at this point but still in very good contact with map
14. fast train, but solid map contact again
15. +10:00yesterdays white rec course was through here so I picked up the pace out to powerline, passing my train, trail across to sharp bend, down through rough open past green to trail junction, took trail toward finish cutting in at small clearing and across E end of marsh really running strong the POOF. Proceeded to spend the next 10 minutes flailing in here not finding my control but three others, relocating a couple times and eventually seeing someone on a fast exit sprint and following their route back into some pines to find the depression. Quite fitting as I was now quite depressed after having had an excellent series of controls from 8-14 and most of the way to 15.
16. out to trail, and down
F. sucks, with a capital S
