Boulder Dash 2007: Red Day 1

cmorse

1. +00:15Down trail to jct, straight in picking up other trail, then across N end of marsh, hesitated a bit having a little trouble getting contour interval right, then proceeeded over to get it
2. +00:30pretty much straight, but trying to negotiate the green and getting tangled up in a bit of it, contours still not feeling quite right, explored some minor knolls just north of control before headed up to hilltop. Sneak into control ahead of Hillary who started 2 minutes ahead of me
3. +04:00went offline winding in/out of laurel expecting to catch W end of eastern marsh and wound up going right between marshes without realizing it - I was expecting a distinct change in vegetation which never materialized. Got into the knolls above the #3 on map and realized I should have hit the marsh by now, turned around to go back. Not good...
4. +01:00very tentative now, pretty much along the line, but still zig-zagging laurel and not feeling too confident with contours. Into circle ok, but still quite uncertain
5. +00:20out to trail, up to 2nd junction then in, got tangled in green near the small marsh west, but managed to extricate myself without wandering too much to hit the circle ok
6. pretty straight on the line, starting to read contours better (features seemed bigger than I was expecting)
7. +02:30no hesitation, out to trail and running pretty hard, plan to cut in a 2nd water stop but before I could get there (while reading map) I face planted... HARD. Probably lay on the ground for at least a minute before getting up, totally shaken. Walked into woods, picked up trail, and quite easily up to control but not even at a brisk walk
8. mustered a slow jog over on the line and nailed it
9. +03:00thought about going right, then for reasons I still can't fathom, went left instead. Crossed the marsh before getting to trail, up to trail on top of hill, then somehow missed the first junction, came to second, paused to figure it out, then up to bend and over, must have left too early as I passed below it and came out on trail beyond. Slogged back up hill to get it from there
10. +01:30pretty straight, reading contours well most of the way, then got sucked up the spur NE of circle before realizing and coming back down
11. +03:00looked at first hill, saw rocky ground to right and chose left instead, navigated quite cleanly around the hill, then intended to head down the partly open spur to control. Except the partly open spur was totally impenetrable scrub oak, similar to Blue Hills. Finally bailed off the spur to right into clean runnable woods, this would have been lot faster if I had gone over there first
12. +01:30straight dowhill through green, picking up streambed, cross trail and follow L edge of marsh/stream and into control. Clean enough so time lost must be fighting vegetation
13. +01:30down, across stream, up along hill looking for large cliff past it and uphill prior to saddle, up onto main hilltop, but due to some evergreens I didn't see the knoll at first. Again, took too much time to ascertain I was in the right spot, just not seeing the feature or flag
14. +00:30along the contour line into open area, then turned R and downhill to clearing. A little rocky between the clearings
15. +00:30Down out of the woods and along line (didn't take trail to R) saw the finish and stopped in the road to find a copse, didn't see on on the map, didn't see an obvious one in front of me, so tried to estimate how far from the finish line I was and deemed myself too close so started back up the road, but it really didn't feel right, so back down to see flag behind the trees. Misjudged as I don't think the finish line was in the finish circle. And is 4 black dots on a map really the symbol for a vegetation feature?
F. demoralized jog in. which wasn't 90m either...
