Race Evaluation

US Long Course Championships: Blue

EWhite

1. Across the marsh - I just love getting my feet wet with 18k to go! Walked the hill - already conserving energy.
2. took the trail all the way around avoiding as much climb as possible.
3. Headed west to the road and around while the folks with me went straight. I lost a little time but picked my spot to attack #4 and saw how far I was behind the Halden runner and Sergey. Never with anyone for more than a leg after this until just after #18.
4.
5. +07:00Planned attack down long north pointing spur. Turned off ridge one spur too early, relocated from circular open marsh. Then blew final approach as I didn't see the low spur between the linear marsh and the control - the woods by the marsh were thick in spots. Wandered around east of the control for awhile.
6.
7. +02:30Pace brought me up a little short with nothing to correct from. Relocated off large flat hilltop.
8. +01:00A little angry - pushed through the next several controls. Went a little left of line and missed this one by not going to bottom of the reentrant immediately once past rocks.
9. Best leg all day. Throught the end of the field, past the next vegetation boundary, and through the saddle. Caught a visiting Swede at the control.
10. Straight - followed S edge of marsh to clearing where I crossed. Went a little low and R on the last hill.
11. Straight. Met Rex at the control.
12. Attacked from south branch of reentrant.
13. Blasted down into reentrant, attacked from boulder at reentrant junction.
14. Lack of fitness starts catching up with me - walked up the ridge to the road junction.
15. Went a little too far R and over spur north of control.
16.
17. Walked a couple of times on the road. Cut across to parallel trail and attacked from south edge of light green (small pines), down reentrant and over spur.
18. Up to trail junction, then followed line of cliffs around west side of hill, over spur and down to control.
19. Just after leaving #18, I was caught by Ben Legg who I thought was several minutes ahead of me. Oh, hell - now I might have to actually push it!
20. A little uncertain on approach, slowed to be sure and watched Ben overshoot by one rock outcropping.
21. Took off as fast as I could to open some space on Ben. Looked back a couple of times and he wasn't in sight.
22. Slogging up last ridge to trail, looked back and there's Ben, 10m behind me! Oh, #@%&! Do I have anything left?
F. Slow motion sprint...
