Race Evaluation

Billygoat: Billygoat XXIX

dlevine

1. Knee is hurting; will need to be careful about falling behind a given pack. Not an issue here, though as I follow the train to the flats above the cliff and go in. Group of five as we leave.
2. Bang to the trail and in across the green to where the stream disappears. Then it's just a matter of slogging upt the spur.
3. Long side hill, mostly behing JJ and Stephen. Nasty hill here. In retrospect, I like the idea of skipping this one.
4. Seems easy, but there is confusion as the pack crosses the stream and Rick DeWitt crosses R to L appearing to have missed it. We go right anyway and find it.
5. Through the bland area the pack widens and then converges on it.
6. Pack goes right; I choose left to get the road. Probably not as bad a move as it looks now. I got confused by extra towers with fences, but got there more or less with everyone else.
7. Left fork; beautiful woods leading in.
8. UGLY brush coming out. See JJ and Stephen run by as I try to hack my way out.
9. With George Hawes as we head down. Again see JJ and Stephen. I get caught on wrong spur and whack my knee crossing in. OUCH....
10. Across field. Surprisingly large number of people in sight as we head in.
11. Looks like some folks are trying to gain time by blitzing through, but I take multiple cups and a shot of GU
12. Chasing George and Dave Webber up the hill.
13. Long slog with George and Dave. I get caught too high and descend and punch after them.
14. Catch them as we go in together.
15. Chatting about skips as we go down the trail. Discussion of skipping 16 never occurs.
16. Around the trail, to the amusement of some hikers.
17. We split up as we ascend the hill. Dave W. first, then me, then George. As I finish drinking I try to pour a cup for George, but he's wearing a CamelBak and doesn't need it. Man, are style points ever hard to come by this year!
18. SKIP
19. Too far left, but correct late. Three of us now.
20. Only two as we head high across the hill top - probably too high, but we correct as we get close.
21. Down and in...
22. Up the road and right in...
23. +12:00Down to the road; momentary bobble before turning to trail; then disaster! Overshoot, get way down, relocate off swamp by start triangle, pace count carefully, miss again. (Where is everyone who should be behind me, anyway?) Loop once more; decide I'm really lost, look up and see it about eight yards away. How blind can I be? I was "here" a while ago...
24. Like it matters now...
25. Oh wait, I might still break 3 hours... Better run...
F. Gonna make it... (Of course, if I had remembered that I started my watch a minute early....
