HVO A-Meet: Blue, Day 2

1.
2. Right-hand route around the marsh. Managed to jump the stream when I left the road, but a branch plucked my hat off and it landed in the water.
3. Almost straight, just avoiding pointless climb.
4. Hawked! See my training entry for details.
5. Got off a smidge to the left when I got close, backtracked a few steps, and came right down on the control.
6. Flat for a bit, then climbed up to the right spot, and might have walked right past the flag, just a few meters to my right, if somebosy hadn't come in right then and punched.
7. Contoured most of the way and climbed up at the end.
8. CCW around the hill that #7 was on, picked my way past the cliff, then E to the trail, and followed it to the big spur that #8 was on — didn't feel like fighting that vegetation again!
9. Just about straight. The patch of laurel just before the control was like a beacon.
10. Was hoping to get a glimpse of the "oubliette" pit, which I understand was taped off, but I was too high up the hillside. Overshot a smidge, turned around when I hit the trail.
11. A bit to the right of the line. There was a WOC93 control in the reentrant on the S edge of the circle, but I didn't look for remnants of the control stand.
12. Got to about the right spot okay, but then there were a whole bunch of little bumps, and I had to check a few of them before finding the flag.
13. A little left, up through the saddle, right of the first marsh, left of the second, then started drifting left, but I caught myself and went right up over the yellow hilltop (and just about through somebosy'd campsite).
14. The best choice woudl probably have been to go a little left of the line, but that's not what I did. I contoured right of the line, and it was such a joy to run through the area around the AT hut, which is like a picnic grove, that it was totally worth it.Finally climbed over the ridge a little late, and on the attack I was concentrating too hard on navigating by the green rather than reading the contours, and got suckered in by some other boulders that were down the hill a way, and I had to climb back up.
15. Above the green, picked the right cliff, but stood on top for a few seconds because I didn't see the flag right away.
16. Headed out too far right, closer to E than to N, and I could tell that things didn't look right. I was expecting a low hill up ahead, but I was seeing a big hill, and it had a prominent cliff on it. And the reentrant on the far side of the saddle looked wrong. After covering about a third of the distance, I figured out what was what on the map, turned left, and was fine from there.
