Race Evaluation

Flying Pig XI, Day 3: Blue

mindsweeper

1. +00:30Stopped short on the two small hills NW of the knolls.
2. +01:45Didn't climb enough and missed to the left. Relocated on the gulley junction due E of the control.
3. Picked a slightly too high route and got caught in some green stuff. Maybe a lower route would have been less troubleshome.
4. +00:30Didn't notice the power line route choice and went straight instead. Didn't see the gulley on the spur so I crossed the bigger one and hesitated for a short while before deciding it had to be the right one.
5. Carefully would my way through the green on the faint trail. Could have run faster if I didn't care about blood loss.
6. I headed out of the control to the E, but then realized the green wasn't bad and turned to go straight over the spur. I went up the trail in the reentrant, and traversed a bit at the top.
7. Runnability looked good on the other side of the power lines, so I entered the forest earlier than I had originally planned.
8. +00:15Straight to the road, but again I hesitated before deciding I was counting the reentrants right.
9. Up one spur and down another...
10. Instead of contouring around the first reentrant I went straight, but I contoured to the left around the second one in order to avoid the medium green. Probably could have attacked the green instead.
11. On the trail down the spur, then stayed to the right of the long reentrant.
12. +00:30Tried to go straight, but hit the reentrant to the NE.
13. +00:30Coming out of the control I saw Maricel running into it. This motivated me to push mysef to run faster and be less hesitant. I followed the power line to the main reentrant, then up the trail on the spur again. Maricel stayed under the power line longer. My shortcut gave me a poorer attackpoint however, and I lost whatever 10-20 seconds I had gained on the route choice by going to the wrong reentrant to the S.
14. Went a bit far to the left, Maricel punched ahead of me I think.
15. I was able to climb the hill faster than Maricel, which surprised me. I went straight for the spur on the other side of the power line bend, and found the control easily.
16. Ran as fast as I could down the spur without checking the details closely. I actually half expected to come out left of the pond, but didn't mind getting to the road instead. As I got to the bend in the road and entered the forest, I noticed Maricel behind me to the left. I went down the trail and stayed on the line pretty much, then rounded the lake to the right. Instead of following the valley I climbed up on the hillside, which was probably a mistake. (The green in the valley was quite runnable.) I ran down the road and entered the forest at the second parking lot. I didn't gain anything on Maricel, but still punched ahead of him.
17. Running faster than Maricel but less accurately, I swung wide right and had to climb back up the reentrant.
18. Again went a bit far right, and this time Maricel passed me.
19. Crossed the spur on the trail, then skipped to the next one. Maricel started running down on the other side of the reentrant, but I stayed on the trail until the last minute and regained what I had lost on the previous leg. We avoided too much climb on the other side of the road and contoured for what seemed an eternity. Maricel punched ahead - I was a bit tired from my fast but inaccurate running on the shorter legs.
20. Went initially higher than Maricel and kept a straighter line, punched just barely ahead I believe.
21. +00:10Ran up the hill as fast as I could, and went to the wrong sign to the NW. Maricel went to the right one and now had a few meters on me.
F. I had spent too much energy on the previous climb and couldn't catch up with Maricel. A sore reminder of our Relay duel the previous year, although this time it lasted for much longer.
