| 3. | Just before I got to Control 3, I saw Eric Buckley, who started 2 minutes ahead of me, punch it. | ||||||

Did not follow plan Bad compass work +02:05 | I followed Eric, somewhat blindly. I expected to cross two trails but only crossed one, and kept waiting for the second one but instead, crossed a very prominent fence. Instead of locating the fence on the map, I located Eric's yellow leader jersey and, after a short while, caught up. We slowly crossed the two reentrants, and I spotted the control off to the right in the third, just like the map said. Except it was waaaaaay to the right, and we had been way too high up on the slope, inside all the nasty green. I think Control 3 may have been too high on the spur, and therefore, exiting it in the expected direction towards 4, one would cross only one trail, not two. | |||||
| 5. | I attacked from the small bridge by the creek that was not shown (I don't know if there is a way to show that kind of a feature in ISSOM). I punched before Eric. | ||||||
| 6. | Eric passed me on the way, but I got to Contol 6 ahead of him. | ||||||
| 7. | Eric passed me again. I misread the map and had expected the control to be in the major drainage, but it was in a small reentrant that we had run past, somewhat. | ||||||

Bad map reading +00:40 | Eric passed me again. I tried to find the insdistinct trail that went to the control, but we hit the main trail too far to the S and so the indistinct trail had already branched. Not seeing the indistinct trail, I weaved through the green, keeping Eric's yellow jersey in sight and finding a couple unmapped shallow pits/wet spots. Eric was finding a better route through the bushes, at one point following an unmapped abandoned trail. When we ended up at the correct ditch, we were too high, too far S and too close to the field. We spotted the flag easily. | |||||

| 11. | I followed Eric from here on on the easy legs, straightening up some of his corners. | ||||||
