Race Evaluation

OCIN A-meet (Night, Relay, Ultra-long): US_Ultralong_2012_7 Red

acjospe

1. +00:15Indistinct trail/medium green bashing through the woods, then lost some time because I thought I'd run in the woods rather than on the trail and took some greenbriar to the face (white woods my ass).
2. Had to run a little faster here to catch back up with Balter and Iliana, made contact at the control.
3. Down the trail, up the hill and into reentrant, with Iliana, back up to Vadim and Nate
4. Contoured to next reentrant.
5. Over the top of the hill, with Andrei Loghvin and Balter and Iliana. Having a really good time, now!
6. Up to trail, along trail for a while, nearly to the road, then down and up the gully. First butt slide of the day (but certainly not the last!). Walked up the other side carefully.
7. Original plan got changed when I was like ooh, I'll follow Greg. But then he told me he was going through the parking lot to get food, and I was like, I don't want to go that way. Kind of him to say something, even though he ended up on the winning route. Went out to the curvy trail, down the gully, up the gully, around on the trail for a long time, then spiked the control. In retrospect, definitely should have beared a bit more to the right, and avoided some climb, as achilles and calf were really hurting today.
8. Bashed down the nose and then took trails; should have just gone to the lake. Lost some time according to splits, because it was a shit route, but I executed it well.
9. Along the lake, then up the reentrant to saddle. With Andrei now.
10. Up the indistinct trail (having learned that down-and-up is bad in the rain), to road past water stop, down the nose and in to the control. Saw Biggins leaving.
11. Down and up, Andrei went around, times were basically the same. Caught up to Biggins, who was whining that he had no spikes.
12. Straight.
13. Trail to road to little trail then down nose.
14. +00:30Down and up the nose, which was very, very, slippery. Around the green patch on the left, nailed the control, lost Andrei.
15. Trail then up the gully, to more trails, then through the green on rough compass, nailed it.
16. out along white patch to clearing, then trail to road. Still trying at this point; took a second gel at 16.
17. +13:00Disaster leg - planned to just go straight, but go pushed a bit right, then more right, but not so right that I hit the trail. Eventually ended up in the gully south of the gully at 17, and thought somehow that I was in the gully at 20. Saw Ed on the other side of the gully, and called out "Ed, where the fuck am I??". Eventually he explained it well enough that I knew where I was and where I wanted to go, and I went back down and up a gully, through some dark green, and in to the control, where I met up with Ed again and he gave me a hug.
18. +00:45Down the stream, saw Balter and Iliana and Vlad as I crossed it, then up the gully into the campground. Ended up a little right, and ran around the green woods rather than bashing through it. Not really physically tired, but my ankle really hurt and I was mentally crushed after my disaster mistake.
19. Pretty straight. Slow up the hills.
20. Back past campground and down the nose, up the 17 gully, crossed light green and hit more greenbriar, which was making me whimper, so I would yell at myself to be tough, muthafucka, but it didn't work, and I was just miserable and cold and wanted to be done running. Tears may have leaked out once or twice.
21. Straight, drifted a little left and hit the rootstocks with the control, crossed the trails and saw Eric, who was quite cheery despite the broken hand.
22. Out following deerpaths.
F. So happy to be done.
