Race Evaluation

Possum Trot Weekend:

ebuckley

1. +00:20Pretty much followed the lead runners while doing some quick checks for skips. Looked like #2 would be best. Overran control a bit, then lost some time punching because my hand was frozen.
2. Skip
3. To the obvious route on the road. Led for a bit, but then Swampfox passed me.
4. Around through the fields. One of my better moves at the fence crossing - a hook slide on the ice and went right under it and popped back up hardly breaking stride.
5. Basically redline, crossing the second field just E of the refreshments. Was a little behind Swampfox at the control with Tom, David, Justin, and a few others close behind.
6. Swampfox made an exit, taking the around route. Went straight with Tom. I think our route was fine, we just couldn't match the pace.
7. +00:30Pretty much straight, missed right after leaving the control and that allowed David, Jerrit, Justin and Randy to catch up.
8. Straight, attacked from the east.
9. Out to the field and then around on the road. Moved into the lead of our group, but David blew by me on the descent to the control.
10. Straight, then slightly left to cut out the climb just before the control. Back in the lead.
11. +00:20Went around the right side of the lake, which was too far out of the way. Tom came with me. When we got to the control, David had caught back up by going straight.
12. Straight, back in the lead.
13. Up to the road and through the corral. Tom, David, and Jerrit all arrived while I was exchanging maps.
14. Around on the road to the left with Tom close behind. David and Jerrit took the trail route, but boomed a junction. At the time I didn't know if they were ahead or behind, but figured they were probably behind since I hadn't made a mistake and visibility ahead was good.
15. +00:30Dumb route, meant to go between the buildings but didn't notice there was an uncrossable fence between them. Adjusted right and took the road which was really too far out of the way. Tom was still close behind.
16. Followed the road, then trail into the control. Saw Justin coming the other way. Wasn't sure how far back Tom was, but I felt like he was losing ground so I pushed the pace.
17. Easy leg following the stream the whole way. Ran really hard through the light green to consolidate the gap.
18. Up to the road, then around to the trail. Attacked from the trail rather than going all the way around because I figured visibility would be better from below.
19. Up to the field then to the big trail. Followed the little trail to where it turned NW then straight. Still running pretty hard.
20. Most direct route through the fields. The woods were a bit trashy going down the spur (mapped as white) and I got hung up a couple times. Realized that I was getting tired and losing focus, so I backed off just a bit.
21. Through the field attacking from the N.
22. Stayed in the fields, attacking from directly E.
23. +00:30Didn't see the field that ran E to the control so I went around to the field S of the control and attacked down the spur. Easy, but I'm sure the other route was better.
24. Skip.
25. Came back out on the field I should have gone in on and then took the fields. Cut in where the green was thinnest.
26. Followed W edge of stream to stay out o the green, then NE from the stream junction. Crossed the second field near just N of the rockface and contoured around to miss the green. Not sure why this leg was so slow, I guess I was just being careful.
27. +00:30Throught the fields to the right of the line. Overran it just a bit.
28. Up to the corral then between the lakes.
29. +01:00Managed to cross the fence three times (knicked the corner of the first fence and then under the big fence). Was trying to be really careful since this looked like it could be tricky, but still missed left. Adjusted when I saw the corner of the field and went straight E to the control.
30. Hit the trail and then through the fields.
F. Was pretty sure I was second and was greatly relieved to find out I was right. Dick made me go back and do the run-in again so he could get a picture.
