WCOC Tarrywile Meet: Red

stever

1. Haven't orienteered much this year (or last), so out-of-practice taking splits. Missed a bunch. Practiced A-meet start. Didn't look at map before go, and was still fiddling with punch card when that arrived. Took me a while to realize that the OB made starting left a non-option. So headed down to parking lot and up into the woods -- totally missed seeing the trail up the hill. After that, OK. Trail seemed mismapped, but like Phil ignored that (mostly). Just contoured to the big re-entrant and then down the spur.
2. Up to right of castle. (Sure is cool.) Wiggled along fence that was blocking road, then straight up spur.
3. To left of first OB, wider than I wanted to because a large tethered dog was determined to eat me for breakfast. Down the hill to road, and turned south. Since rest of the leg was boring trail run, I looked west to see how green it looked. Answer was not very. So what the hell, I cut west down to the white area to see if I could cut the corner. Almost was a winner choice but was slowed by the cliffs at the south end. So was slower but way more interesting.
4. Light green looked runable, so had fun and headed straight over the knolls. Then rough straight bearing, over the wide spur, then adjusted to go right of the large knoll ... spike.
5. Did I mention I don't go up hill? Boulder field looked brutal; swamp looked dry and open, so headed down to run the swamp. But I kept sinking into the swamp 6-8 inches (clearly my G co-efficient is much too high). So I left the swamp as soon as I got past the worst of the boulder field. Traversed the hill parallel to the trail, and cut the corner.
6. Contoured south. Terrific open runnable terrain, beautiful fall folliage, really enjoyable. Gosh I miss orienteering. Eventually picked up the trail, but again I had no interest in yet more boring trail running. So just before where the OB ends, I angled off the trail and headed WSW up to the saddle, went west after passing below the pair of tagged cliffs and straight in to the control. Again, probably a bit slower than taking the trail all the way around, but a lot more fun.
7. North to big trail. Followed around west side of hill. (East side is surely faster ... but I don't go up hill.) Left the trail where it parallels the stone wall. Straight from there, through (as George says) wonderful open forest.
8. Follow re-entrant westish to trail. North on trail. Feel foolish and I'm hesitant because I lose track of where I am. Resign myself to running north on trail until I can see the big reentrant due east of the control. Scoot down it and straight into the control.
9. *Really* wanted to find a route to avoid climb, but when initially scaning for a left route I didn't see an obvious attack point: somehow I didn't *see* the stone wall until much latter! So I headed back to the main trail, up the right fork until the old car. Then headed northish. Plan was to go by the west side of the hill top, but that way looked really rough. So I ended up going around to the east side instead. Then down and in.
10. Up to the break in the wall, then ESE-ish, over the wide spur to the trail. Went high enough to pass over the top of the line of cliffs, then straight in.
11. Down the hill ENE, keeping an eye out for the big re-entrant cause I knew that would point me towards the wall. Spike.
12. Angled down the hill (Weeeee). Over the dam. And, rats, I don't go up hll. Puff, puff, puff.
13.
F. What a beautiful day it was. Wish I had my camera at the finish.
