Rocky Mountain 1000 Day: Blue Day 2

jjcote

1. Map shock. Hard to read. Took it carefully, found another control first, NW of the correct one.
2. So tiny, hard to tell that this black speck is a triangle.
3. +04:00Basically just dumb. I could make excuses about how the contours and such were difficult to read, but the fact is that I stopped about halfway, in the wrong reentrant, and went up and down a couple of times, unable to natch things up, until I realized that I needed to keep going.
4.
5. Found teh rocky pit SW of the control (very deep and dangerous!) and that made for an easy attack.
6. Down the arroyo/trail to the big reentrant directly W of the control, and followed it up.
7. +00:30Erroneously checked out the smaller spur just outside the circle on the W first.
8. +03:30Got to halfway between #8 and #9, and really couldn't see the contours well enough to know what the hell was going on (sitting here at a desk, I still can't). After checking a couple of bare rock areas, decided I might be too far S, and headed N, where I found #9. At least that gave me a solid attack point.
9.
10. As I was running through open land, I couldn't see it on my map (I can now), but the contours were okay.
11. Trudge, trudge, trudge...
12. +01:00Control wasn't hung up (which I was expecting -- I ran early and the course setter asked me to hang this control, which he had left on the ground to keep it low-key, being near the jeep trail). Found the streamers, but there was no control or water jugs on the ground under them. Scratched my head and looked around, and finally spotted them behind a nearby rock. Moved jugs and hung control.
13. +01:45Misread the contous, probably all my fault on this one. Didn't see at first that the boulders were over the ridge in the next reentrant.
14. +03:00sa says three minutes, but it felt like it could have been more. Made great time going downhill, kept good track of where I was, and kept telling myself that the catch here was to make sure not to lose track of my position at the very end. And that's exactly what I did, lost track at the end. Got a bit too far to the right, Ithink, then looped around and must have just about walked past it. Decided I didn't know where I was, and tried to bail to the bare rock stuff NE of the control. In the process, I found the form-line hill NW of the control, and attacked successfully from there.
15. Down the arroyo on the E edge of the map.
16. Down the arroyo, up along the hillside at the end. Investigated a cliff first, that's unfortunately obscured by the NW part of the circle.
17.
18.
19. No idea what was going on after I crossed the road, unable to decipher the map. Just kept going in the right direction, looking for a big area of bare rock, which fortunately had a boulder cluster at its toe.
20. +02:00Couldn't read the contours, never saw the trail when I crossed it, and wound up going off the map NNW of the control. Found myself behind a house, picked my way around it, and managed to come into the control from the W.
