US Classic Champs: Green L Day 2

1. Confused parallel features
Lacked concentration
+03:00
Took trail to right, but something about junction after wash didn't look right, so I paused until it made sense. Followed trail E, then tried to cut up to road corner, but it was a long time coming - I was too far E. Ran the road W then N to intermittent trail. Followed bearing NE. Thought I'd run over the first spur to the second, but after searching some rocks, figured I must be one spur too far S, so headed N and found it.
2. +01:00Totally lacking confidence, went NW to road thinking I'd follow it all the way around to N of the control. After 100m, where the road bends NW, decided that was stupid and headed NE up the spur. Saw the pits then the boulder cluster near the red line. Contoured in from there. Has to stop to pee along the way (:45)
3. Disturbed by others
+03:30
Soon after leaving the control, took pity on someone looking lost. In the process, lost my place, crossed a small wash thinking it was the big one, searched some rocks, decided to bail for the trail. Thought I could see the damn before I got to the trail, but not taking any chances after my horrible experience yesterday (unable to relocate on a road), went all the way to the road til I saw the junction. On the road over the dam, then down alongside the wash to the control.
4. Up broad spur, read the rock features well. Feeling mighty tired already.
5. Lacked confidence
Hesitated
Straight line to the wash junction, up the E fork til cliffs end, ENE to NE corner of open area, bearing & pace count over spur to bag. No errors here, but obviously moving slowly, trying to be careful.
6. Lacked confidence
Hesitated
Again, no errors, but must have been moving slowly trying to exercise care. Left #5 NNE to avoid rocks. Wound up going over "island" in the channel N of st line. From E end of 2nd, broad spur, caught glimpse of the bag.
7. Stayed a little left of the line as it was more runnable.
8. Lacked confidence

W down spur to wash junction, then contour around spur to trail, hitting it just S of junction. Follow trail up and then into open area, then follow bearing over ridge down into wash just N of all the rocks. Nail it from there (but, again, going slowly).
9. Bad compass work
Lacked confidence

SE to intermittent trail, S to trail, follow trail until beyond facing cliffs and then head SSE. Wanted to see boulder on spur before wash, but didn't see it and was afraid I was in trouble, which I was. Tried to get to the highest point on the ridge. Somehow ended up staring down a huge rock face into a big wash, and figured out I was 70m ESE of the top. Contoured under the top, into one saddle, then another then a third and found the bag.
10. Took a chance

SW to wash, then down to bigger wash then follow that S. Thought I'd follow that S to wash junction, but cut W over spur when I saw the rocks end. Up onto next spur, contoured a bit, saw manmade object (a stick in the ground with a little fencing), took bearing towards control, saw rocks and ran there withouth thinking - no bag. Searched further til I saw major cliffs dropping off. Realized I must be SSE of the bag, turned around and saw it.
11. E all the way to trail. Getting up the hill was tough, but after that it was easy. Follow trail into open area, head SE just N of rocks, cut down reentrant to cliff.
12. +00:20Bearing towards control, wound up standing on a knoll with no bag in sight. Puzzled, finally say the bag about 5 ft to my right, obscured by thick branches.
13. Tired
Not thinking clearly

S to trail, then W. Really tired, had to walk some even though it was flat. Kept trying to interpret the contours on the other side of the road, but didn't really understand until I got to the big drop off. Climbing up the other side made me a bit dizzy and nautious. Stood still for a minute until my brain worked again. Contoured W just under the rocks and nailed it. (Amazing considering how much trouble I was having focusing.)

+02:00
Not thinking very clearly. Dropped into wash then followed trail S til I saw the fence corner.
F. Tired
Much too physical for me. Thought I really stunk until talking to others convinced me that I wasn't THAT bad :-)
