Didn't save much climb, but I added distance and went through more green. Perhaps a bigger factor was that I was by myself, and not pushing to keep up with the crowd. By the time I rejoined the crowd, I was with people who I really thought I should be way ahead of. Maybe this was good, as it kept me from burning myself out too fast at the beginning, but Peter's assessment was, "You're an idiot".

5. 850m 10:14 12 +4:00 64% 61.6 1:33 12:02   4095m 50:09 15 +17:37 54% 12:14 Back up to the small trail, up the hill, cut the corner to pick up the other trail, across the ride, and in just in time to see Henderson, Nietupski, and Tryson leaving. Time includes maybe a minute resting before KotM leg.
6. 920m 10:27 12 +3:00 40% 72.4 2:30 11:21   5015m 1:00:36 15 +20:10 50% 12:05 Started off good, but this was the first time I tried running fast, and my digestive system went into distress. Had to stop for a couple of minutes in the middle of the leg.

12. 750m 7:20 3 +44 11% 94.5 9:46   13470m 2:07:56 11 +34:36 37% 9:29 Out ahead of the crowd.

14. 435m 6:22 13 +2:37 70% 64.0 30 45 14:38   14430m 2:23:09 11 +39:16 38% 9:55 Had to dump out my shoe at the start of this leg, which allowed everybody to catch up. I also went a hair too far and off to the right approaching the control; knew where I was, but didn't get to the control too elegantly.
15. 340m 4:04 6 +26 12% 91.4 11:57   14770m 2:27:13 11 +39:32 37% 9:58 Back in the lead, with Alan Young, who showed up from somewhere.

19. 170m 1:34 7 +25 36% 76.2 9:12   17050m 2:51:28 8 +42:20 33% 10:03

We were about even when we poppoed out of the laurel, but I mistook the indistinct marsh to the left for the crossable marsh to the right, and turned the wrong way. Wondered where those guys were going, and felt pretty dumb when I figured it out.
21. 1020m 9:05 12 +2:54 47% 74.9 1:00 8:54   19135m 3:21:09 11 +46:38 30% 10:30 Probably could have had a cleaner line to the control here -- first drifted right, the overcorrected, and went through too much crud near the control.
22. 765m 14:04 8 +4:03 40% 74.9 1:00 18:23   19900m 3:35:13 11 +47:41 28% 10:48 Around to the left through the marsh, which I knew was decent running. Had to stop and dump out my shoe before goign up the hill.
23. 800m 9:40 6 +1:37 20% 88.5 12:05   20700m 3:44:53 11 +48:47 28% 10:51 Could see Rick up ahead, and we caught Ross Smith, who I amost couldn't recognize because he was looking so wiped. ("Hey, who are you, and what are you doing in Ross's clothes?") Passed him, as he didn't seem to be able to run at all.
24. 250m 3:13 10 +1:33 93% 64.2 12:52   20950m 3:48:06 11 +50:20 28% 10:53 Could see Brad Whitmore up ahead.
25. 1425m 19:27 10 +6:49 54% 72.6 13:38   22375m 4:07:33 11 +57:09 30% 11:03 Around hill to the left, the up the reentrant to catch the faint trail, which was inexplicably streamered. Ran into Brad again as I was approaching the control.
26. 980m 15:14 12 +5:18 53% 67.8 4:00 1:00 15:32   23355m 4:22:47 11 +1:01:41 31% 11:15 Bad choice. Brad went back to the trail, and came back through the marsh (I guess). I went straight, but blew it and wound up to the right of the second marsh, so I just went out to the road. When I got there, I found Ross, who had perked up and was now stroking. (He took the smart choice: the "wrong" way out of the control to the road, then up onto Lake Welch Drive, for a road run the whole way.) Right behind him was Tim Good, who I was able to get away from, but I couldn't keep up with Ross. Approaching the control, Ross was coming out, right on the heels of Brad.
