There is good new and bad news to report on this weekend's Junior Training Camp. First the good news:

Thanks to the generosity of nearby HVO members, we will have sleeping and dining accommodations and, with logistical adjustments, we will be conducting much of the planned training exercises at Blue Mountain.

Now for the bad news:
Because of the constraints of preparing meals in a residential kitchen, the number of participants will be limited to about 30. In order to meet this limit, only the advanced training exercises will be conducted, and, only those who would have been in the advanced training groups will be accommodated. This will enable us to provide needed training for JWOC-candidates, as well as future JWOC hopefuls.

To those who would have participated in the Intermediate and Beginners training, and their parents, I offer my most humble and sincere apologies -- and a promise: We will make this up to you.

First, obviously, those who will not be able to attend the camp will be given full refunds. Beyond that, there has been talk of a one-day White/Yellow/Orange training camp, as well as reduced fees for the next Northeast Junior Training camp. Exactly what we will do is still to be determined, but, mark my word, we will do something beyond the refunds.

Thank you for your understanding in the wake of this turn of events.

Chair, Junior Team Executive Steering Committee

Updated Mar 22, 2012

It is with great displeasure that I must inform the campers, coaches, parents and other volunteers planning to be part of this weekend's Junior Training Camp, at Blue Mountain, that cancellation is highly likely.

The reason: Double booking of the lodge that was discovered just two days before the camp (Wed 3/21) by park management, with the other party having booked/paid first.

There is a possibility that part of the camp could be salvaged in a modified, truncated form, but that is still to be determined. In the meantime, we should have a definitive go / no-go decision on the original camp or a replacement by 4pm, Thursday, March 22.

Very regretfully,

Guy Olsen
Chair, US Junior Team Executive Steering Committee

Original camp information:

This camp will be open to all junior orienteers, who can complete a white course independently, and will focus on improving orienteering skills while promoting a fun social atmosphere. Lodging will be in bunkrooms at the Blue Mountain Trailside Lodge, but space is limited to 15 girls and 15 boys. Six meals, plus snacks, will be freshly prepared, on-site by Janet Porter.

Training exercises, appropriate for the skill levels of the attendees, will be organized by a group of experienced junior team trainers, lead by Erin Schirm. Erin, a former junior and JWOC Team member himself, recently earned a degree in Physical Education from Syracuse University.

Good times are guaranteed!
