OCIN’s annual goat race, the BillyPig (and Piglet) comes to East Fork State Park. We’ll also offer White, Yellow, and Orange courses that are a bit longer than usual. Includes TROL school league competition.

Preliminary course and map information:

Map: East Fork State Park (North side); 1:10000; 5m contour; produced 2006 (Vladimir Zherdev)

Courses:

White: 3.3k; 12 controls; Climb = 90m. A short portion of the white course between control #5 and #6 will involve following a mandatory streamered trail. This trail is marked in red on the map, and marked with bright pink streamers in the field.

Yellow: 4.6k; 11 controls; Climb = 180m.

Orange: 5.5k; 13 controls; Climb = 260m.

The Piglet will contain at least one forked control. After punching a forked control, each competitor should run only one of the two options leaving the control. A forked control may involve committing to two controls before rejoining the main route. Competitors on the Piglet may skip any one control (except the finish). Water will be available at three locations along the course (in addition to the start/finish area). Length (before skips): 8.0 – 8.2k, 17 controls; Climb = 275.

The Billy Pig will contain at least two forked controls. After punching a forked control, each competitor should run only one of the two options leaving the control. A forked control may involve committing to two controls before rejoining the main route. Competitors on the Billy Pig may skip any two controls, except for the finish, and except for a mandatory sign-in/water control at the extremity of the course. Competitors are required to write their last name at the sign-in station. There is a major stream that passes through the Billy Pig course, and depending on the weather before the event, there is likely to be at least one wet-foot crossing on the course. (I have tried to route courses to suitable crossing points of this stream, and have been able to avoid getting wet while setting the course.) Water will be available at five locations along the course (in addition to the start/finish area). Length (before skips): 13.3 – 13.7k; 26 controls; Climb = 590.

The Billy Pig and Piglet will have a pre-race briefing at 10:50 AM, followed by a mass start promptly at 11:00. Competitors will not be allowed to look at their map until the start. The courses for the Billy Pig and Piglet coincide through the first six controls. The Piglet eventually re-joins the Billy Pig, and the two courses then share their final seven controls.
