The Longest Day 2022 - Catskill Racer Update
The recent change in race location brings us back to the Catskill mountain Range in NY. If you have never raced with us in the Catskills, you are really in for a treat. These mountains offer prime adventure racing terrain, with fantastic mountain biking, rugged hiking, and unbeatable views. With the amount of time we have to race day, we are working on our new course nonstop.
This point-to-point modified rogaine style course will allow racers to choose their own adventure. Experienced teams will need to rely on strategy, route planning, and time management while rookie teams can “relax” and concentrate on moving through the mandatory sections.
Packrafts: NYARA is excited to introduce packrafting to this year's event. Please note that NYARA is not providing boats for this race. This discipline is a game changer for what is possible in a race and we feel that it will continue to be the future of the sport. Experienced racers and expedition racers will be well versed in rafting. This race is a soft and fun intro to packrafting for everyone else. Your packrafts will be transported for you with your paddle gear.
Inflatable Standup Paddle Boards and other similar inflatables are allowed. We see no unfair advantage.
The race will be headquartered and hosted out of the Belleayre area. We are working to finalize our exact parking and registration location and should have that information shortly.
Race Course Details:
There will be a bus ride to the start location on race day morning which will take approximately 1 hour. You will be starting with your packrafts. We will allow each team to have a single gear bin as well as a paddle bag. The paddle bag will travel with you on the paddle section. Water is abundant throughout the course, therefore no jugs or gallons of water will be allowed in gear bins or bags, we want to save our volunteers’ backs.
The course will have a minimum of 45 miles of biking. A large portion of biking will be on rail trails as well as single track mountain biking. We aim to keep road biking to a minimum.
The course will have a minimum of 15 miles of trekking with 6700+ feet of elevation gain. Trekking will be on and off trail. Racers can expect to be trekking in the dark.
The course will have approximately 8 miles of packrafting on flat water.
As we finalize more details, we will provide updates with a breakdown of where and when teams will see their gear bin.
The Longest Day is part of the USARA governing body structure and, as a result, a USARA racing license is required for The Longest Day. This is important as membership provides you with the necessary insurance during our race. Those of you who choose to purchase an annual membership will have access to other perks such as pro-deal discounts. On the other hand, a one day license is available to purchase if an annual membership is not needed.
We look forward to race day with all of you!
