[2/3 update from meet director Phil Hawkes-Teeter] So, after my first day of placing controls (8 of the 30 total), my Conditions Report is that the woods and trails have a 2-3 inch snow cover. The top inch is powder, and under that there is a crusty 1-2 inch layer. There are some bare patches, and there are some small streams and wet patches. At this point, I am not allowing entrants to cross the ponds/marshes.

The forecast is for “snow showers” Thursday, Friday, and Sunday. Judging by what today’s “snow shower” produced that’s basically a dusting to one inch of new snow.

So, what does this mean for equipment choice? It really comes down to what you are comfortable with, with a few exceptions. I spent today placing controls using my low-profile Ice-Bug boots. They worked fine. But if you are a great back-country skier, you could consider skiing. I can see no reason to use snowshoes, unless we get more snow than expected. I’m not a mountain biker, but they should be good on trails/roads; for biking off-trail you likely need a snow-bike.

But, those are my guesses. You make your own choices. If you wish, you will have ample opportunity to test out different equipment before the race starts.

For those less familiar with Rogaine/Snowgaine type events: Of the 30 controls, approximately 10 are on or quite close to trails/roads. The other 20 are anywhere from 100-300 meters off trail/road.

Finally, if you plan to come, please send me (philht@gmail.com) an e-mail stating your intention to attend and what equipment you plan to use (skis, bike, etc.), so that I can have enough maps printed. Also, list your SI stick number, or if you don’t have an SI stick of your own, let me know that so I can keep track of how many SI sticks we will be renting (or need to come up with).

But no matter whether you advise me or not: just show up! I’ll have extra maps and will accommodate you one way or another.

The Rules & Notes are available for download.
