END OF UPDATE 2

Park in the south part of the parking lot for the closed medical center. Meet at the trail junction just inside the woods southeast of the long-term care facility. Bring at least $1 for each map (NEOC copyright; trail run & orienteering are 2 separate maps).

Please sign up here (or send me email) if you are going to come, so that you can receive your custom map and start time. In the comments, please provide the timing information requested below.

This training event will have a few twists.

The map will be altered to provide line-O, swath-O, rough-O and/or contour-O training. You'll get practice paying close attention to features (line-O), and *not* paying close attention to features (rough-O). Many trails will be removed to provide for more focus on contours.

There will be an advanced course and a course for kids (& adults) working on white/yellow skills. The two courses will share controls, and be designed for similar overall times.

You will pick a target minutes/km time, which should be what you'd be able to do in New England terrain on a good day. Alternatively, you can send me your times on a few races that also included Will Hawkins or Samantha Saeger, so that I can calibrate to their times. Start times will be assigned in advance to aim at a mass finish. Autograph-hunting is encouraged ("Yeah, I got Benjamin Austin's signature when he was only 8 years old and beat me at Boojum!").

To appeal to the Saegers, a long trail run will be available before the start of the orienteering portion, or after the finish.

Kids & their parents interested in some practice training on Friday 3/17 (a school holiday) can contact Barb: bidwbb@yahoo.com; 617-661-9579.

Map: Color, 1:10000, 2.5 m contours.

Directions: South on I-93 from Rt. 128 or north on I-93 from Boston to Medford, exit 33; north on Rt. 28 (Fellsway West) 1/2 mile to right turn onto Elm St. 1/2 mile to rotary at MDC skating rink at junction of Highland Ave. and Woodland Rd.; turn left (north) onto Woodland Rd. 1 mile to the former Boston Region Medical Center on right. Turn into the former Center; park in the south parking lots near the long-term care facility.
