Ozark's Navigation Challenge will be a ROGAINE style outdoor orienteering race with two divisions: Classic (map and compass ONLY) and GPS (map,compass and ANY GPS device). UTMS will be provided for the GPS division.
ROGAINE: Rugged Outdoor Group Activity Involving Navigation and Endurance, is a map and compass adventure sport. Racers have to visit as many controls as possible and return to the finish within 6h or 12h hours. Each control will be marked in the field by an orange and white triangular flag.
When & Where: The event will be held in Mark Twain National Forest, Council Bluff Recreation Area, about 100 miles south from St.Louis, MO. Camping is available in the National Forest, please refer to the following website about reservations: http://www.recreation.gov/camping/council-bluff-re....
Start/Finish:
12-HOUR RACE: 7am - 7pm
6-HOUR RACE: 1pm - 7pm
Both races will start and finish at the Council Bluff Recreation Area Group Shelter next to the lake (check additional map).
Map: Each team member will be provided a modified USGS map.
Course setter team: Mike Shifman (Possum Trot Orienteering Club, 50+ year of orienteering experience) and Andrei Karpov (Minnesota Orienteering Club, GearJunkie/WEDALI, almost 30y of orienteering experience)
Scoring: The team that collects the most number of controls in the allotted time (6h/12h) wins. Racers returning after the finish time will have their total score reduced for each minute overtime.
Teams: There are no limitations on the amount of people in a team and there are no gender specifications. Solo racers are also allowed with Andrei's and Mike's approval.
Mandatory gear: Each participant must have a 100 oz water container, compass, enough food to complete the race, clothes that will endure 6- or 12-hours in the forest. 1x cell phone per team as well.
Award Categories: Elite (up to 35), Masters (up to 50) and Veterans (over 50). The category of a team will be calculated as the average age of all the team members. Prizes from Sponsors for all 3 divisions!

Fee: Early registration $65 per person (if you register before April 1st). $75 per person (if you register after April 1st). Possum Trot, MNOC and other orienteering club members receive a $10 discount. The fee covers: race insurance, map, after race food and drinks.
