With a Saturday relay festival on new terrain at Fair Hill in Pennsylvania, we introduce the first mixed sprint relay at an American A-event. That's for the intercollegiate athletes.

Club teams can look forward to a revamped US Relay Championships--re-imagined to increase the intrigue for competitors and spectators.

The weekend culminates on Sunday, with classic orienteering on new map and terrain at a Delaware classic: White Clay Creek State Park.

Notes on rules for the US Relay Champs

The 2014 US Orienteering Relay Championships will be governed according to the standard OUSA rules of competition, but will feature the following revised point structure and team composition requirements. (These are variations to the rules granted by OUSA sanctioning and the OUSA BOD just for 2014. There have been no changes to the rules for sanctioned relays in 2013 or after 2014.)

*) Ages 17-20 or 40-49 receive 1 point
*) Ages 15, 16 or 50-59 receive 2 points
*) Under 15 years of age or 60 and older receive 3 points

A female orienteer receives 2 points, in addition to any age points.

A team can contain at most 1 male between ages 21 and 39 (inclusive).
{ed. note--eligible teams can have as many males between 21 and 39 (inclusive) as they want, provided that the team still manages to have a total of 3, 6, or 9 points--points which will be generated by the other runner(s)}

The final deviation: there are 3 divisions: 3, 6, and 9 point teams. Each team must have 3 runners (and no one can run more than one leg.)
