Map and compass Land Navigation challenge at Mingo Creek Park, 35 checkpoints to be found. The park is pretty big, with lots of features, rolling hills, meadows, rough open fields, and pine forests. Most of the control locations were chosen for some kind of feature-specific interest, picturesque quality, and the experience of getting to the control location. Difficulty level of most controls is on the "Orange" level. Course designer took four trips to the location, and the vetter took two trips. Not your usual event, but more like a dense mini-rogaine.
Short and Long Score-O
2 hours
4 hours
Beginner courses also will be available (White, Yellow).
(btw: the Yellow course will use electronic controls. SI cards can be rented for $1).
Mass start will be at 11 AM (we might consider another mass start at 1 PM for a second wave of 2-hr people)
Map will be 1:15000, printed on 11x18 sheet
No registration, no pre-payment, just show up. Oh, yeah: there will be no awards, no medals, no certificate of completions, no shirts, no swag.
GPS devices are ALLOWED and ENCOURAGED, as long as they are not used for navigational purposes and just for tracking purposes. When you download the GPS data and super-impose its track on a map image, it's fun to see where you ended up going, how far from your intended route you went, or figured out finally where were you when you felt completely lost. Share your route, stories, (dis)adventures with others. It makes it all FUN.

what it will NOT be:
Mingo Bingo: everyone gets a map of Mingo Creek dotted with a few square white blank areas, numbered from 01 to 99. Then, at the luck of the draw, numbers are called, and those having a map with a square numbered as such, gets a partial map square that can be glued on the map sheet on the blank area square, to eventually complete the map. As soon as all the square blank areas are filled, and the map is complete, participant can leave and start the event. Mingo Bingo. [btw, I think this would be GREAT to try out sometime...]
