Discussion: Tierra Viva - Argentina

in: Adventure Racing; General

Double_Downon11:
There are at least 5 AP'ers that will be travelling to Argentina this weekend for the next ARWS - Tierra Viva.

http://tierraviva.com.ar/2013/?lang=en

Curious to know if anyone else from AP is heading down to Argentina for this race. With active Attackpoint member Bash participating herself, we won't have her experience to help us follow along so I am hoping a few others will help to "navigate" through the coverage (assuming there is some). :)

Bash:
The Tree Huggers will be:
- Wokitoki (Chad Spence)
- Hingo (Paul Hingorani)
- Bash (Barb Campbell)
- Vince Trudelle, who has no AP log (gasp!)

The Milton Basement Racers will be:
- Tiny (Tim Grant)
- Simpy (Mike Simpson)
- Andrew Reeder, known on AP as Mr. Funderstorm (but no log)
- Audrey Kelly, known on AP as M&M

This may be a difficult race to follow, as it is not a point-to-point course. There are 4 loops out from a Central Camp, and in some cases, it sounds like we will have choices in our approach, e.g. we could choose to do a trek first or a bike section first. Within a section, some CPs are done in sequence while others can be done in any sequence. So it probably won't be one of those races where the GPS tracks tell you a lot. Hopefully, the leaderboard will be kept up to date for the spectators.

Thanks for your interest. It will be nice to know there are friendly folks keeping an eye on us! :)

Here's some info from the final race newsletter.

All teams will have all their equipment in the Central Camp (in Villa Traful).
The race starts and finishes in the Central Camp.
The race will have four sections.
Each section begins and ends in the Central Camp.
The sections may be single sport or combine the three sports.
There will be a very long section of more than 200km that combines all three sports. The strategy will be crucial. In this section you will go through several places where you can refuel with food.
Color maps will be scale 1/50.000 for trekking and 1/100.000 for MBike and Kayak.
Maps are delivered in parts between sections, ie the night before the race only will be delivered the map and section 1. After Section 1 you will receive a map of Section 2.
The maps do not have the CP marked. You will have to copy the CP on your maps from the master map that will be in the Central Camp.
Each section will have its mandatory instruction. For example, during a trek you will go through 4 CP but must first make a specific CP, then the other three are free. [They also mentioned that we can sometimes choose the order of disciplines.]
The good orientation will be very important, especially in the trekking.
There will be many virtual checkpoints CP (where you should take a picture) and also several CP where there will be a person.
During Mountain Bike sections must navigate carefully to not pass aside virtual checkpoints (VCP), which are not on the main road, but will be on roads or trails to the sides of the main road.
[Previously, they mentioned that we will kayak on 3 lakes. The lakes are huge!]

Categories: Because not complete the minimum number in the category Pro (only registered 4 teams of the 10 needed to assemble this category) as stipulated in the regulation, all teams will be competing in the General Category. So are all competing for the free registration for AR World Championship of Costa Rica.

I think I can guess where we will be paddling! We fly into San Carlos de Bariloche (just off the map) and will be at a hotel in Villa La Angostura this weekend, then we'll be transported to Villa Traful.

It looks like it wouldn't take much of a nav error to get a chance to visit to Chile on this trip. ;)

I guess it was just too hard for them, Osteo. ;)

WandAR, I'd rather not call it our "last meal". :)

I've updated the distances above based on a written handout. There will be no choice in the sequence of disciplines or legs, only of some CPs within some legs. They will update leader board with finish times of each leg. No GPS tracking.

Many CPs are photo CPs. I thought this meant we would photograph ourselves with some landmark so the RD wouldn't need to put up a flag but there is a reflective CP # at each one. The clever thing is that we have to take 2 pics to prove that all 4 teammates were standing beside the CP sign.

And, as they say, that's all she wrote. Catch you on the other side! All the APers seem to be doing well. Thanks for your interest.

Wow. Huge jump by MBR! One thing that sucks about not having any live coverage, is we are guessing as to things like sleep strategy, and can't see teams possibly going off-course/making mistakes etc. Super bummed about no Spot tracking as it would be interesting to see things at a more granular level.

BiT, that poses an interesting thought/question... for races that do not use them, I wonder if they would allow an individual to use/wear one to people at home can track them? As they do not allow phones to be used, and a SPOT is only outgoing, I wonder if it would be breaking any rules (although I haven't read any that says it one way or the other).
Mar 27, 2013 4:16 PM #

Also I would think it would be a good idea for safety reasons. I have no clue what communications they have with race HQ (Sat phones, cells etc) but locating a team in trouble I would expect would be very difficult without some kind of GPS broadcasting device.

Unfortunately it appears that the first team has had to drop out of Tierra Viva.

GIMNASIO EQUILIBRIO BARILOCHE has been listed as dropped out. No reason as to why yet.

They were sitting in 4th place going into the 3rd section so hopefully it isn't anything too serious.

JayXC asked about cut-offs, but it seems there are no cut-offs or mandatory stops along the course, and the race ends when the last team comes in (unless it gets really ridiculous). The only possible mandatory stop is a safety zone stop for inclement weather (in this case, the clock keeps ticking, so teams could catch-up if stuck in a safety zone with faster teams.)

Article 8: Race time / time limits
- The Organization will handle the official race time. This will be the real time. The race clock will start at the start and stop when the last team to cross the finish line.
- Teams can be penalized or recharged with time, these times should be completed in the PC that the Race Director decides. This is to keep teams in their actual positions.
- No time limit to go through the PC, or enter the Central Camp. But if a team at the end of the race is very delayed such that can no longer be reach the goal in time will be suggested to leave the race.
- If an area is declared security zone “Safety Zone” times NOT neutralize

p.s. Signing off... good night, and hoping for great news in the morning.

From the race officials:

"It dawned ... and we expect another strong day of racing with excellent time.

14 teams have reached the Filo Hua Hum PC and all continued trekking stage. There are still three teams to arrive, among them are Cara Sur, Lima Logistica Total Dogo and Sancor Seguros. And we confirm the abandonment of Ansco [thus, Tree Huggers have likely moved up at least another spot to 14!].

The British team Adidas Terrex Prunesco continue pointers, and are making the Falkner trek, followed by Columbia Vidaraid team who are doing the bike to Falkner."

Soo confused... Latest update has teams below finishing trek ended at Filo Hua Hum. I am guessing that from there they then bike to Falkner? Any thoughts?

The team Todoaventura and Karen's Adventure trek ended Filo Hua Hum.

Karen's Adventure is eating at the camp and plan to sleep for an hour and then leave.

I think we've figured it out. From the first bike of section 3, teams leave their bikes at Filo Hua Hum then go on a 36 km out and back trek. What confused me is how long it is taking most teams to complete this (14-16 hours). From there I believe they hop on their bikes and ride counter clockwise over towards Lake Falkner where they will do a paddle followed by another trek then bike back to basecamp to complete section 3.

4. & 5. Karen's Aventura & Milton Basement Racers maybe at Falkner now?
6. Alquimistas - on the way to Falkner?
7. Walhalla Specialized - left FHH at 5:35
8. Freemind - left FHH at 8:20
9. & 10. TREE HUGGERS and Sanasport Warmpeace - left FHH at 9pm
11. & 12. & 13. X Tres Trevo & Secretos de Ullum & Sport Total have also finished FHH (around 11pm), but will rest before heading to Falkner
14. & 15. & 16. Ansilta Viento Andino & Cara Sur & Lima Logistica Total Dogo are still on the FHH trek
17. Seems that Grupo Sancor Seguros is still chugging along somewhere at FHH

Ansilta had been expected earlier, but looks like they had trouble with one CP, hence the delay and drop in position.

I tried to make sense of two photos of timesheets for the kayak and trek at Camp Falkner. The timesheets are both incomplete (unlike the FHH trek sheet DD posted above). So some of this ranking is conjecture, mainly based on kayak-to-trek transition time.

Kayak start - transition(time on kayak) - trek finish(time on trek)

  1. Adidas - 06:20 - 13:45 (7:25) - 20:26(6:41)
  2. Columbia - 09:07 - 16:53(7:46) - 01:31(8:38)
  3. Todoaventura - 14:25 - 21:35(7:10) - ?(?)
  4. Karen's - 16:44 - 01:10(8:26) - ?(?)
  5. MBR - 18:19 - 02:29(8:10) - ?(?)
  6. X Tres Trevo - ? - 03:43(?) - ?(?)
  7. Freemind - ? - 05:00(?) - ?(?)
  8. Treehuggers - ? - 06:03(?) - ?(?)
  9. Aliquimistas - 21:50 - 07:07(9:17) - ?(?)
  10. Sport Total - ? - 09:10(?) - ?(?)
  11. Walhalla - 23:50 - ?(?) - ?(?)

Unranked - Grupo Sancor Seguros - ? - 08:30(?) - ?(?)

Aside from the top 5, this might all be incorrect ranking, especially since it would mean quite a bit of shuffling, and a drop for Alquimistas and Walhalla - and a kind of quick MTB and kayak for X Tres, who finished FHH at 21:45, only to complete the kayak by 03:43... Seems fishy to me. Thoughts??

Actually now that I look at DD's post of teams that were listed as being on the Falkner section earlier, that order matches what I have here, with even Secretos de Ullum ahead of Walhalla. Wow, lots of movement here. I'm dying to know who slept when, and if that is the reason for these big shake-ups. Can we confidently put Tree Huggers in 8th after the kayak then? :))

Where did you see the time sheets? Cool that they are sharing them but tough to decipher. Section 4 is supposedly a 45km trek. I'm guessing it won't be as tough as the one at Filo Hua Hum but who knows.

Nice movement Tree Huggers! Maybe some good, wise pacing strategy (both intensity and/or sleep) that is enabling them to keep up a good pace later in the race while other teams are getting tired?

And nice ranking MBR!

I just had a revelation as to why the Falkner kayak/trek timesheets seemed to not make sense to me. We now have Alquimistas and Walhalla "on schedule" per FHH timesheets. Bash had mentioned that they will be able to choose the order of disciplines somewhere - so quite possibly this is what happened at Falkner.

So please disregard the ranking above for Falkner, as it's based on everyone doing kayak then trek. :) If anyone wants to rework it based on conjectured travel times from FHH, go for it!

Off to Hard Rock...

Not many updates since this morning. It looks like the Treehuggers finished section 3 around 9 am EST.

This was also posted on TV site for winners.

After 93 hs. career and more than 500 km. tours, the English team adidas Terrex PRUNESCO was the winning team of this year's Live Earth 2013.

With an emotional arrival in perfect physical condition, the team of Nick Gracie, Chris Hope, Tom Gibbs and Jari Kirkland of England, crossed the finish line at 9:22 pm today. am.

Keeping most of the race during an important advantage over the team that secondary, "Columbia Vidaraid" Adidas Terrex members Prunesco were thrilled to have achieved the goal of finishing the race and a great time.

They emphasized the beauty of the places chosen for each tour. And they recognized that had to implement various strategies to meet the various stages in a long time.

Joining the group is one of the keys that lead to a good performance of it, and that was reflected in this team. Adidas Terrex Prunesco Congratulations!

Hi all! Thanks for following along. With our AP friends watching, we know we're never alone in the woods. We're soooo excited for MBR!!

The Tree Huggers are fine. We had been as high as 9th a couple of times in the middle of a leg and were aiming for top 10. We actually beat MBR on Leg 1 (kayak) but it looks like the results didn't get that right. Too bad, we were laughing about the folks at home seeing us above them in the standings even though they had flown by us on bikes early in Leg 2.

Unfortunately, one of our racers wasn't feeling well today. We divided his heaviest gear into our packs and slowed the pace to accommodate. In adventure racing, you think of ways to solve problems; you don't question the existence of the problem.

We had been on Leg 4 for a few hours - a long mountain trek, maybe 20+ hours for us. We emerged from the tree line into blowing, cold rain with piles of hail on the trail. Then the guy on our team who normally says the least turned to us and asked if we should be climbing higher and descending into a more remote area for a long trek with a friend who was feeling poorly and moving more slowly than usual. As soon as he asked, all of us knew the right answer. We went from chasing our closest rivals to descending toward town in just a few minutes.

We're all fine with it. These things happen, and we still had fun anyway. We had already raced about 450 km through beautiful, varied terrain. And tonight we could enjoy a drink with dinner while waiting to cheer in our friends. Life is good.

My teammates are still sleeping after many hours. MBR is up already. Because of Easter weekend, we may be sleeping in the TA for the rest of our stay. I stayed up late chatting with Cathy, Vince's wife who arrived with their two children yesterday for a 2-week post-race vacation. I hope to get a shower today. The TA doesn't even have a working toilet so it's not fancy but it's a great place to pack and hang out with other teams. Adidas Terrex are nearby and happily went away with some of my spare food. Thanks all. The whole finishing 8ish hours are still a bit of a blur, we knew we were pushing hard but never really were sure what was up. We had 3rd for a period as we passed Topoaventura who had turned off their lights and waited for Tiny to find the CP. They poped out and it was on. They were much faster in the first 5 min (hard hard climb out of a reentrent ) . Then it was a 17ish km trail run and a 10km mtb. We pushed as hard as we could but alas they got there just faster. We honestly didn´t know if we were fighting for 3rd, 4th, 5th or even 6th. We just knew we were fighting.

Thanks everyone for following along. What a race and what a team. During section 4 we ended up on some high rock and weren't sure of our next steps. It was a tough decision to sleep until morning so we could see (2.5 hrs). Morning came and we pushed on to the finish of the section with a 15 km road run to wrap up that section. At the end we learned we were 4th and an hour down on 3rd. The last leg was pretty short and easy. 10 km bike 35 kn trek all on trail except 2km in the bush and then 10km bike home. At that point we were really racing to hold 4th as we figured Karen's adventure would be right behing us. We hit the last checkpoint at the same time as Todo, but I assumed 5th had caught us as we had a bit of trouble finding the right point into the woods. We ran the trail back and when we asked the volunteer at the bike drop he said 5th, although he seemed more out of it than we were. We biked home and enjoyed our accomplishment given Top 5 wasn't expected when we started this race. It was only the next morning we finally realized what had actually happened.

Can't wait to see everyone when were home as we have some pretty funny stories to share with you all.

congrats to both canadian teams...it was fun to track. Ugh, major withdrawal though...not another one to follow until early May :)

Congrats to both Milton Basement Racers and Tree Huggers, can't wait until you are back and share the stories! I'm curious if any new Reeder-isms were invented :-)

Well done Treehuggers and MBR. We followed along religiously and were thankful for all of the hard work to translate and update leader boards by fellow Apers. Great showing. Tough not to know where you were placed but you guys ended up in a great spot on that leaderboard - huge congrats for that and I can't wait to hear the stories.

Big props to all from France!

Great job MBR and Tree Huggers. Rest well and enjoy post race feelings.

Fantastic coverage everyone, thank you so much. Awesome pictures.

Definitely have this race on my radar.

I just finished reading it all. Followed every twist and turn closely and soaked up every photo! Thanks for pulling it all together!
Oh I'd be frustrated by the lack of, or inconsistency in, the directions for finding that last trail. And what a heartbreak that you were stuck sleeping on the floor for 2 nights after your race!

Thanks for taking the time to read my looooong report!

The word "heartbreak" might be a little strong but as we marched down that mountain to drop out of the race, we imagined a wonderful hotel with silky sheets, fluffy towels, wifi and hot showers so it was disappointing to have to throw our sleeping bags beside our bikes for two more nights. To be fair, the central camp was an amazing TA for an adventure race; it just lacked a few amenities as a hotel. :)
