Bash:
OK, the event has a name, time and location now, so I'm starting a new thread. The previous discussion is here.

On Sat. Feb. 16, please join local racers and AR organizers for the Adventure Racing Story Swap at 12:30 p.m. at the Toby Jug Pub, 15 Allan Dr, Bolton, ON. This isn't just for experienced racers. In fact, if you and your friends are new to AR or have been thinking about trying the sport, this is the event for you. Instead of bringing in the pros to share advanced tips for international racing, we've lined up a few adventure racers to share their learning experiences in the sport.

1) Chris Laughren on his first year of AR (2012), which included a finish in his first 24-hr AR

2) Team Bugs in Teeth - Sally Heath and Mike Simpson on lessons learned as they moved into multi-day AR

3) This event is being coordinated by local race directors Bob Miller, Sean Roper, Jay Hahn and Barb Campbell. We'll share a little info about the upcoming 2013 season for STORM Racing, Wilderness Traverse, Angry Seagull, Logs Rocks & Steel and the Salomon Dontgetlost Adventure Running Series.

In case you want to get in some training beforehand to earn your beer, we've coordinated our timing with Golden Horseshoe Orienteering, who will be hosting the O-Cup #4 Ice Breaker in the morning. It's a fun age/gender handicapped winter orienteering race just 15 minutes north of the pub. You can get more info and register for the race here.

There is no cost for the Adventure Racing Story Swap but we hope attendees will thank the pub for supporting our sport by buying lunch and a drink. We need your RSVP for planning purposes as this British-style pub is cozy. Please e-mail Barb at "info AT wildernesstraverse.ca" to reserve your place. Hope to see you there!

Thanks for all the RSVPs. If anyone else if planning to attend, please let me know here or by e-mail at info@wildernesstraverse.ca.

Just a reminder that if you're planning to do the O-Cup, you'll need to register separately for that event by Thursday evening. There are currently many more Story Swappers than O-Cuppers but I suspect you're just procrastinating like I did. http://www.dontgetlost.ca/index.php?option=com_con...

Bash:
45 people have registered for the AR Story Swap and so far, 14 of them are registered for the O-Cup IceBreaker. Hmm... If you miss Thursday night's registration deadline, you may need to offer Pat-hectic a case of beer to sneak you into the event. Don't say I didn't warn you!

Anvil:
Indeed. As soon as registration closes at midnight I'll be sending the map order off to the printers and leaving first thing Friday to set up the event.
I've no network coverage in the remote hamlet of Palgrave and surrounds, so even if you ask, I won't be reading it until Monday night!

simpy:
Thank you Bash for all your work for yesterday. Lots of fun.
Feb 17, 2013 3:12 PM #
Bash:
Thanks to you, Funderstorm and Simpy for taking the time to put together those great presentations! Nice to see so many friends in the off-season.

The unexpected thing was that several regular bar patrons (not including the drunk) and one of the bartenders became interested in learning more about adventure racing. As I was leaving, they were asking for more race post cards for friends, and we finally agreed that I'd just leave them in the bar!

Double_Downon11:
Hey for the record the "drunk" asked some really good questions! He may just sign up for Angry Seagull's Paddling session if he can stay sober! ;)

Thanks again Bash for all your hard work yesterday!

It was a great introduction. Especially interesting to see a race in Temagami where I spent many weekends in days gone by - enough to be an expert in bug repellant for the area: Muskol keys the black flies and mosquitoes 10 cm from you. You can hear them, but treasure the fact that they can't come close enough to bite. It does dissolve certain forms of rubber and neoprene though.

Great event! Wish I could have stayed longer! :-(

Wish we could have got you up to the microphone to share one of your stories!

A whole bunch of them came flooding back to me as people told their stories...
Feb 19, 2013 6:45 PM #
Bash:
Next time. :)

Btw Double_Downon11 is right; the drunk *did* have some excellent questions. Too bad he kept on chatting loudly in between.

Myka:
Thanks Bash for organizing the event! Great fun, awesome stories :)
