This sounds like the problem that he choose 1:15'000 scale in ocad instead of 1:10'000. We had the same problem at training a few years back...
You're right. It's funny now and I was ultimately fine with it because I really prefer long races. I think it was a bit unfair on most runners because they did not realize there was "bonus" distance until they had blasted out too hard on the first half of the race thinking it was a 60-70 minute race.
Having an "higher momentum down the long slope" seems a very effective technique. I'll try to work on it in some restaurant.
