Discussion: Sat. night social = Meet the US team!

in: OCIN A-meet (Night, Relay, Ultra-long) (Nov 30 – Dec 2, 2012 - Cincinnati, OH, US)

Nov 20, 2012 1:01 AM #
Hello all hearty Night-Relay-Ultralong Champs attendees!

Saturday evening, at the Holiday Inn meet hotel, the US Senior team will host a post-dinner reception. Snacks will be available, and we'll have a cash bar for any desired beverages. Several team members will be there to share experiences of the past year's major international events, including WOC in Lausanne, Switzerland, and the recent US victory at the North American Champs at Delaware Water Gap, Pennsylvania!

It'll also be a great place to just gather after dinner with other orienteers competing over the weekend from near and far. So bring yourself, your friends, your night-o and relay maps, and come hang out!

Time 8pm-9pm, with room open for hang-out until 10pm.
Suggested donation for entry = $5.

RSVP very much appreciated, either email me at skiingali at, or just say you're coming on this thread, I'll pay attention! This is really just for numbers to get the right amount of food.

See ya there!
Nov 20, 2012 2:05 AM #
Indeed. See you there! Thanks for organizing this Ali. OCIN is generously donating the cost of bartender and hors d'oeuvres. So all donations will go 100% to the US team.
Nov 20, 2012 4:23 PM #
Soo... civilized! See you all there.
Nov 20, 2012 5:02 PM #
Count me in. Did something similar 2 or 3 years ago at a DVOA meet at Hickory Run. Got a good crowd and people seemed to have a lot of fun.
Nov 20, 2012 5:11 PM #
thanks OCIN, see you all there!
Nov 20, 2012 5:21 PM #
I'll be there, although I don't eat much ;)
Nov 20, 2012 5:30 PM #
they have cash bar too :)
Nov 20, 2012 6:03 PM #
I'll be there, too! Thanks OCIN for the donations!
Nov 20, 2012 7:05 PM #
Thanks, Ali, I'll be there as well.
Nov 20, 2012 8:40 PM #
Food will be a cookie / desert tray and a veggie / cheese tray. They look pretty good to me!
Nov 20, 2012 10:43 PM #
Great idea -I'll be there! Nice fundraiser and seems like a legitimate opportunity to do some social networking and elite O discussion at the same time :-)
Nov 20, 2012 11:32 PM #
Ditto. Holiday season and end of season get together, a great reason or two:).
Bill, didn't we just have a beer or two at the end of long, dark drive thru the woods?
Nov 20, 2012 11:42 PM #
Bob, yes indeed and I have pictures of you, Mika and Tim to prove it! Interesting drrive and may night O be similarly memorable :-)
Nov 21, 2012 1:42 AM #
Aw, thanks for hosting a birthday party for Max! Wait -- I guess it's not; liquor for an 8-year-old's birthday doesn't sound right ...
We'll (me, Nadim, Max) probably be there; at least we'll stop in, since we're staying at the hotel.
Nov 21, 2012 4:41 AM #
I'll be there too.
Nov 21, 2012 8:36 AM #
BTW, Erin might also be having course reviews for the juniors after the relay...
Nov 21, 2012 2:52 PM #
Yes. We are planning on a junior coaching / training/ course review session right after the relay. There should be plenty of time after that to get dinner then get to the team social. If there is interest maybe we can also have some games or activities for younger juniors at the team social. The HI has a small video game room and a very nice indoor swimming pool so parents and juniors can keep that in mind.
Nov 21, 2012 6:41 PM #
Thanks - RSVP yes Barb, Dave, Izzy.
Nov 26, 2012 3:19 PM #
Please count us as 2 + 1 junior for the reception.
Nov 27, 2012 2:36 PM #

Nov 28, 2012 1:34 AM #
Coming! Great idea.
Nov 28, 2012 2:08 AM #
Happy many can make it (thanks to those who responded!), and we'll have food for even more, so continue to spread the word and just swing by on Sat eve!
Nov 28, 2012 5:21 AM #
Also, we will have early check-in to pick up your race packets, at the Event HQ hotel on Friday from 1 pm until 3 pm. Check-in will re-open at Mt. Airy for the night-O at 5 pm. Looking forward to seeing all of you at the meet, and Saturday night at the Social.
Nov 28, 2012 3:03 PM #
Looking forward to this! May I suggest name tags, with real and AP names, for all attendees? Always helpful.
Nov 28, 2012 4:03 PM #
Nametags are a great idea!
Nov 28, 2012 4:16 PM #
Pink Socks:
Yes! Name tags!

Also, I also think its worth the extra 5 cents to have names printed on the competition bibs. Not only does it make for a better race souvenir, but then it makes it easier to know people's names at the races, too.
Nov 28, 2012 4:37 PM #
I won´t be there, but I certainly appreciated the names on the number bibs at NAOC - meeting so many AP:ers for the first time IRL!
Nov 28, 2012 10:35 PM #
Hey! This is supposed to be barebones! We might not have bibs, except for the relay.

{edit: I'm going to the prep party now---so I'll know in a few hours.}
Nov 29, 2012 2:13 AM #
I will try to convince the MNOC crew to attend. 10 of us in all.
Nov 29, 2012 5:57 PM #
Add two to the list.
Nov 29, 2012 9:38 PM #
Count me in.
Nov 29, 2012 9:47 PM #
And two more
Nov 30, 2012 7:14 AM #
pinksocks, names on bibs is not just about the cost or I'd gladly do it. But I don't know any place that would do those without lots of lead time. Which means we would have had to cut off entries instead of keeping them open through today. If you (or anyone else) want to recommend a printer and process that will do those, we can consider it for Flying Pig or future events. Do we just send art and a list of names to the printer?

We will try to have some name tags available for the social.
Nov 30, 2012 1:00 PM #
Just do nametags for early-enough entrants, and no names for the procrastinators er adventure racers. The procrastinators won't want to be the uncool boys or girls next time.

pinksocks, names on bibs is not just about the cost or I'd gladly do it. But I don't know any place that would do those without lots of lead time.

I'm setup to do tyvek bibs with a 48hr turnaround. I've been doing them for a few meets. The Western Mass 5-Day meet this spring was using my tyvek bibs. The Ski-O WC, and the GA SML champs this spring were printed and designed by me, but on Yupo, which is another synthetic stock I was using before I found a source for a treated tyvek sheet product.

What I do is design the layout in Illustrator, and then get a spreadsheet with all the data to be merged. I do the merge in Indesign which gives me a pdf with one bib per sheet with all the custom data (names, start times, classes, relay teams, SI numbers, anything you want) and then send that to the print shop I work with where we print them on an HP Indigo digital offset press.

Printing on tyvek is really hard due to the staticyness and porosity of the sheets, so they are hard to pickup and feed into the machine. I had to do a lot of searching around to find someone who provides sheeted tyvek that has been treated so that ink will adhere to it better. Most of the companies providing large volume commercial bibs are printing them on a web fed press and cutting them afterwards.

If anyone is interested in doing custom bibs with all the data on them, get in touch with me at

Wow, Ed, that's fantastic!

For "O, ftw!" I went through, which is out of Ottawa. They were one of the better vendors that I worked with. I sent them the graphic design I wanted earlier, and then a simple 2-column spreadsheet (bib number, competitor name) on April 5th. I asked for 400 bibs, and at the time, the number of registrants on the spreadsheet was only up to 374, so the final 26 bibs shipped without names. I asked for a delivery date by April 18th, and they arrived well in advance (at least a week early), because we had them for our packet stuffing party on April 14th.

The bib material isn't tyvek. I'm not sure what it is, but it's the same that they used at NAOC 2010 in BC (which also had bib names, and is what inspired me to do that for our event). The 2010 bibs had competitor name (first name only), SI number, and country, plus a few sponsor logos.

In 2007 we went to the Scottish 6 Day. It was a last minute decision and we registered on line and paid on arrival. Our data was put into the computer when we arrived and our bibs were printed on some kind of water proof material by a laser printer they had there - names, numbers, start times. And they had to be water proof as it poured all week.

At WOC 2011 in france, the O-Festival bibs were printed on Cuturon, which is a non-woven synthetic material similar to tyvek, but that is laser printable (tyvek can't deal with the heat in a laser printer). It is made by the same company that makes pretex, and is unavailable in north america.

We used for last years Nipmuck Trail Marathon and they were great to work with, short lead-time & quick turnaround. However we had about an hour of rain in the first half and the bibs didn't hold up well at all. Went back to waterproof laser labels on generic bibs this year. No logos etc, but no hassles either.

Cuturon would be a good name for an evil robot. All hail Cuturon!

An evil robot with knives. Or an axe. Or something adequately sharp.

A killer robot, or a curative for incontinence?

It was cool to see so many faces at the Team reception last night! I hope everyone met some new people and enjoyed the slideshow and stories from WOC/NAOCs. We raised $276 for the team, so thanks much to all for your donations and especially to OCIN for donating the food and bartender charge!
Dec 2, 2012 7:04 PM #
Great evening-well done team!
Dec 2, 2012 8:49 PM #
Ditto, glad to have been there. PG did a great job as MC.
