Battery life apparently just shy of 12 hours. Or at least, used to be.

Being recharged right now. Should be good to go. Except the strap is all gone except for maybe a couple millimeters around the pin at one end. Maybe eaten?

It is quite the find. Similar to what archeologists experience? Clearly a candidate for OHOF.

Looks from the track like I had a lot of trouble finding that 5th control. Shall we donate it to a museum? Auction to the highest bidder? Or is it finders keepers?

Interesting how the track indicates it was moving around until the battery went kaput. Shows the drift in the GPS signal. Unless the squirrels were running around with it.

Kind of depressing looking at the track - like watching someone struggle and then die.

Hah, that's great that it still works! No water damage even?

This should settle the argument about how much help a GPS is on the course. Look how poorly it did when left on its own.

Phil, you might want to keep it in reserve for when your 310 takes a runner. You know it's going to happen....

Now somebody go out and find the sighting compass that I lost while mapping Townsend State Forest in 1991.

Give us a hint -- what part of the Forest?

Looks like it still works fine. No sign of water inside.

I think I still have my first 305, now quite dead, but with a serviceable strap. I'll see if I can use it on Phil's.

If nothing else, always good to have an extra 305 along, and someone is always forgetting theirs.

The compass was probably dropped somewhere near the very southern edge of the map, not far from the river, which means that it was in the relatively highly trafficked area near the school, although maybe in the bushes where kids would be a bit less likely to go.

I also have a strap from a dead 205, if needed.

I deposited a thumb compass on Mt Tom, near the first BG control when I was vetting the course. Took it off to tie my shoe, then took off without it. Knew where it was within about 30 meters, but still never found it. Maybe should do some training with Amy up there :-)

I'm on the hunt for a 305 strap as well. Willing to offer up cash, a bottle of something, ice cream or saying nice things about you while announcing at NAOC.

It gets a little harder to find these things after some years have passed, just because of the annual leaf fall. By near the first BG control, what precisely do you mean?

Hmm, if Phil's need for a strap is taken care of, might need to talk to Nevin. Maybe the deal could be that I give him the script for announcing the winners of the BK and FC cups. :-)

North of it, on the way to the trail, but before you enter the laurel and make the final drop down. I suppose it's still there somewhere. But I used that control site for the farsta, and a great many eyes have been through the area without spotting it.

I lost a 305 at Phil's Cemetery Hill sprint meet last December - and Phil failed to find it for me...and said "Bob, I feel your pain"...

truth be told, I failed to look for it and that hurt a lot.
