I actually like to unfold my map at a point on a long leg and look at the descriptions on there, because they're orientated correctly for the map. So no worries about having to figure out which corner is NE inside, because there's an orientated picture of which that is on the map. Not sure if that's what you mean, but I did it yesterday on the way to 5 and it really helped me figure them all out.

Of course, remembering everything I'd figured out was my problem :s

I can totally see the benefit of that, but do you think that's best? What if there isn't a nice long leg before hand and I mangle the refolding of my map... I'd be nervous!!

I think I'm going to practice more my interpretation of CDs to map. Will never be easy while running full-out, but has got to become easier if I do it more!!

No you're right, the perfect opportunity doesn't always present itself. But you could certainly mimic the layout, depending on how you hold your CDs. I have mine along the inside of my arm, with number 1 nearest my wrist, instead of curled around, so holding them next to a map held in the right orientation will also do the job.

I think making it as easy as possible is definitely worth it - those things can really screw your brain up when you're in oxygen debt. But you certainly have to do a quick analysis of time taken to unfold and potentially lose your thumbing, vs time wasted trying to figure it out from the CDs alone, versus potential time wasted going to the wrong corner!

Right, think CDs next to map could be a good approach- and definitely have to find a way to effectively figure out the CDs, I do not want to go to the wrong darn corner anymore in sprints, it can just ruin the whole darn race so easily!!

Yup, totally! Give it a go and see how it feels!

(And yes, come practice it at Fairfield :) )
