map holder w/o one...is it old? Compass could at least be reassurance now & then. It could point out a 45-90 deg error.

The view from here: your winter came alive in Tahoe!

Few holders seem to come with compasses. People just glue or tape them on the frame or plastic. I don't use one because it's usually easy to keep oriented off the main trail system. Have made regretful mistakes a few times, however.

Interesting. The holder I bought maybe 5-6 years ago (Nordenmark) has a simple, integral compass - thought all did. Ski O leg might as such: "take the second left, go to the bottom of the hill, then third right, quick left and then one more left at the frozen pond" - and don't find it confusing...:)

Yes, leg to 3 on Sunday's Blue course was straight left, sharp right straight down hill, straight thru jct, then first left of 6-way jct, straight, straight, second right of five-way split, then immediate right to control. All in under 2 minutes flat out. Except I took first right of five-way split and had to double back for 30 sec lost! That was all on big trails. At Tahoe XC the jcts were closer together and a much denser network of narrow 4' trails.
