A foot of new snow during the drive up last night from Sacremento (Ed and I slept while Greg drove and put on chains). And another 6" this morning. Winter looking good.

Areas grooming and opening up.

I see that it has been snowing nicely today too.

CA DOT has a bunch of live cams in the ski-o area: http://www.dot.ca.gov/dist3/departments/traffic/ca...

And Tahoe XC has one not so live (towards the bottom of the pg): http://www.tahoexc.org/general/snow_conditions.php

Looking good, Erth!

Its does look pretty good. It'll have to last for the duration though - extended forecasts show no new snow after today for the rest of the event. Daytime highs in Truckee and at lake level in the mid to upper 40s and sunny, overnight lows in the teens. At least it will be pleasant. Good weather for making syrup!

I don't recall many maples out in the Tahoe area, and Ponderosa Pine syrup is not very appetizing.

John Muir disagrees, at least about the sugar pines...

Do people actually eat that? I can't find any references other than Muir.

I've never seen any, and I'm also fairly doubtful it actually tastes good, being a pine tree and all.

Ran across this the other day. Candy made from pine tar. Looks like something I'd find in my driveway.

Those are awesome! Unusual, but not "unpleasant"! They used to be a little bit difficult to find in Sweden though...

still snowing ?

I've had spruce gum, which was not that appealing. But I was in junior high, and the girl proffering it was cute, so...

...is actually a favourite of mine. I always buy some on the Jukola Ferry. Well, they taste like tar (and a wee bit of licorice maybe) and it´s quite OK if you don´t have too many at one time. People around me say they can smell me from miles away though ;)

Back to the original thread:
(yes, that is boring since this is actually AP, but...)

How´s the snow situation at present - from what could be seen on traffic web cams it looked like there is more snow than before...

I've been following this guy's blog about the Tahoe weather, plus the webcams here. Note that the resort totals are in inches, not cm :). He claims no hype, but I sense a bit of optimism slipping in - its been a warm, dry season thus far... Storm totals look good though. As long as its well packed and groomed periodically I suspect it might hold up for 2 weeks. kadley is the grooming-master though.

Scouting minor trails at Tahoe XC today. Good 2' cover of heavy, packable snow. Just right for working through the terrain. Will be fun trail mazes. Snowmobile grooming to follow.

The Swedish team has arrived: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwEGCuc9gVU&feature...
Quite well done; more so than interesting.

Good for the Swedish team. And their first day skate skiing in the sun at Bear Valley is also uploaded. According to my wife, all positive comments so far. I hope so; I can't believe they've ever seen grooming like that in Borlänge...or Sälen!

Hot! HOT! HOTTT!!!
Ali finishes 4th in the World Cup long against a strong field!
Not sure about the women, but the top 16 of the best 20 men in the world are racing here. Sixteen countries represented.

Just a quick break from the venue to post the news. Sorry, no internet at the ski area, so couldn't do live feeds.

Obviously, more details to follow.

North American long champs still underway.

World Cup and NA champs Long courses are now on RouteGadget. Visit http://baoc.org/wiki/RouteGadget for introduction or go directly to http://baoc.org/gadget/cgi/reitti.cgi to draw your route.

RouteGadget handles Goats, Score-O's, butterfly loops, etc. nicely as it has an option to use splits to determine the order in which each competitor visited the controls. In a way, each competitor makes their own course.
