Hi everyone!

Preregistration is open for the 2012 Sierra Ski-O Tour, which includes the North American Championships and the US Championships (and the World Cup, Round 1). For information about the event, go to http://baoc.org/wiki/Schedule/2012/Ski-O_Tour. To preregister, fill out the form at http://baoc.org/wiki/images/5/53/2012_Sierra_SkiO_... . The form explains where to send it and your check.

Are you planning to compete in the North American or US Ski-O Championships? If so, you must get a preassigned starting times. These starting times ensure that each skier gets an early, middle, and late start for the North American and US championships. If you preregister, you automatically get starting times (randomly assigned), whether you do one, two, or three events in a championship. If you sign up on the day-of-event, you might get one of the remaining starting slots for your course (if there are enough maps) but your starting times will probably be later than the preregistered starting times. In the Sierras, the faster ski times are early in the morning, so it pays to preregister. No guarantees for those who do not preregister.

What if you sign up and later decide that you cannot attend one of more days? No problem, just alert our registration team before the day of the event that you need to cancel and we will refund your money.

What if you cannot preregister but decide later that you can attend our events? No problem for us, but you'll have to pay much higher fees. Also, although you will be able to compete, there is no guarantee that we will have enough maps for your desired course. We should be able to start you, but you will get a later start time, which often means slower snow to ski on (mid day sunshine often turns the snow to slush).

Who will I be competing against? Many of the best skiers for your competitive class from around North America. We've been hearing from skiers from New England, Canada, the Pacific Northwest, the Rockies, and Great Lakes areas. There's a lot of excitement about this event. We'll start everyone who preregisters, so preregister now and ensure that you are on our start lists. We'll list everyone who has preregistered and their start times on our web site. It's easy.

We are looking forward to having you ski with us.

This may be heresy, but what are the downhill resorts like around Truckee? Anything comparable to Mammoth Mountain?

EDIT: Squaw Valley

Yeah Squaw is the big one. Northstar is also big but gets a bad rap because it has less hardcore terrain. Alpine Meadows, Homewood, and Sugar Bowl are a bit smaller but cheaper. Boreal is even smaller but has night skiing every night. They all basically share the same snow conditions since they're so close.

Thanks! Now if only I could learn how to turn on cross country skis...

Just close your eyes, lift your inside ski, and prepare for impact.

A little further, Heavenly Valley = huge.

If you're serious about XC downhill, Mt Rose is a good telemark skiing area. It is just around the lake on the Nevada side, cheap, accessible, and usually uncrowded.

And you can keep track of the ski conditions with this Tahoe-Donner webcam.
