d for both I think. I remember seeing these numbers go by, but after 30 mins of searching I'm unable to find the references.
Sep 29, 2011 3:41 PM #
Pink Socks:
1) This seems like it would be a really, really easy number to calculate, so it's not E. I renewed online this summer, easy peasy, so I'm going with D.

2) I know OKansas is taking the local starts seriously, so they are probably way up in 2011. However, they wouldn't be in the top 16, so their numbers aren't applicable yet. CascadeOC is probably flat, +/- 5%. That said, I don't think we're reporting quarterly, but I'm not the one submitting data. My hunch is E.
Sep 29, 2011 6:22 PM #
Pink Socks:
Follow-up: CascadeOC was down 4.5% from Q1 2010 to Q1 2011 (1234 to 1178), and down 3.2% from Q2 2010 to Q2 2011 (308 to 298).

This is for local meets only, so it doesn't account for the A-Meet in Q2 2010. It also doesn't account for Street Scrambles, which are co-produced by the club, and co-produced by an outside business.

eddie:
From Glen via Vlad (pulled off clubnet I think).

I also thought I read these numbers in ONA, but a glance through the most recent 2 issues last night didn't turn it up, and I can't find it on the OUSA website despite a hasty-search through the BOD and AGM docs and News items. Also looked through Glen's training log reports going back 3 or 4 months and AP threads with OUSA in the title. I'm pretty sure Robin mentioned the online renewals stat, but I can't remember where I saw that. It was a very large percentage. Maybe I heard it said out loud at the July BOD meeting, but there is no mention of it in the minutes.

PG:
Eddie, sorry to give you so much work....

The answers are (d) and, apologies for being a little devious on the second one, +22%, i.e. better than any of the options listed.

The reason I raise the subject is that it seems to me that there are a number of things going on dealing with the strategic plan in general, or starts and membership in particular, and yet there seems to be so little communication about any of it.

For example, the fact that 75% of people renewing are doing it online seems excellent. And I would have thought that our ED, in his weekly reports, would be broadcasting this quite regularly, and maybe giving a push to see if we can get it to 90% or 100%. And also thinking more proactively about what other stuff we can get online, and how soon we can do it, and communicating about that too.

Or even just talking about this because it is good news and it should be shared.

But I don't hear a thing. And it baffles me.

And the second question, up 22%, awesome. Perhaps that was reported at the Board meeting at the Convention? I'm not sure. Perhaps there will be an update at the Board meeting at the SML Champs? It certainly seems like good news. So why is there not any communication of it to the general membership. Along with which clubs are doing the best, and maybe why. And maybe regular reminders about the club competition I saw announced in the recent ONA.

But again, I don't hear a thing. And I'm baffled. I think there are good things going on. Why don't we hear about them?

Meanwhile Boardnet is dead (are Board members afraid to post on it?). Clubnet is mostly dead. And for people like Eddie and me and I'm sure others who are interested in it, what do you think the chances are that there will be any info about the 2012 budget prior to the Board meeting in 3 weeks, when they plan to decide on it?

I just don't get it....
Sep 29, 2011 7:22 PM #
Pink Socks:
Wow, up 22%! I'd be curious to hear how this breaks down. More events with the same number of people starting? Or the same number of events with more people starting?
Sep 29, 2011 7:30 PM #
eddie:
I was a bit surprised by the up +22% number too, but given the variations in club's spring/summer/fall schedules I am inclined to put more emphasis on the annual numbers rather than the 6mo numbers in this case. Same for A-meets. Could have been a warm, sunny spring for example, or just happen to have a few extra meets.
Sep 29, 2011 7:39 PM #
PG:
Yup, could have been this, could have been that, who knows why the number is up. But then the response should be to ask some questions and find out. And then react accordingly.

And if you're trying out new programs to increase starts, then you need to be getting data more than once a year. And you need to be sharing any conclusions more than once a year. And in any case, doing a bit of cheerleading to give more visibility to the efforts.

That's assuming you're actually trying to do things to try to hit the numbers in the plan. Which I think we agree is what should be happening....
Sep 29, 2011 8:32 PM #
eddie:
Exactly. It was great to see the 6mo numbers, no matter how you choose to interpret them. At least they were counted, and an increase is encouraging. However, it took me at least 30 mins to dig up Vlad's post in a now obscure AP thread, when it probably should be on a "Strategic Plan" status page with its own special link where the BOD and documents archives are on the home page. That's at a minimum.

The same is true of the monthly budget reports, which are extremely useful. I may be the only one that reads them though. But you always have to consider them in the context of this being an annual budget with expenditures and income coming in uneven clumps.

I'm really disappointed with the lack of detail in the BOD meeting minutes. I know that complaining about this will get me noting but a pen and paper shoved into my hands and a "well then, YOU write them!" This is the main reason I try to listen in on the BOD meetings, because there's a lot more useful info discussed at those meetings than the minutes would imply, and sometimes I'd like to refer to what was said (or promised) but there's no official record.

I also think Glen's semi-weekly reports should be elevated from his AP training log and occasional clubnet mailings to a "Director's Corner" featured location on the OUSA website, and there should be a whole lot more "meat" in them.

Three weeks from now is Oct 15, which marks the 2.5 year anniversary for the ED. All indications point to 6 months left. I wonder what will happen?

And then you break up.

It's very difficult to ascertain how much of an influence OUSA is having (or can have) on something like local starts. I am running the NEOC events schedule, and I haven't received so much as an e-mail from OUSA encouraging the club to have more events or increase starts. I don't know that any board members have received such communication either, with the possible exception of Joanne Sankus, who was on the OUSA Board. If I polled attendees at NEOC local meets, I imagine most of them have no knowledge of the OUSA initiative, if they have any knowledge of OUSA at all.

I confess I'm too busy with local club activity and training to pay attention to the national programs. I know that they are offering discounts for first time A-meet attendees. The OUSA website is very nice, and seems to have had some upgrades.

How much can OUSA influence its policy objectives? How can they increase starts? Marketing is a solution, and I seem to recall some data passed on to the club about assistance from OUSA marketing major events. Perhaps advertisements or even videos like O.mov could be made and distributed? I know I'm preaching to the guys most diligent in holding OUSA accountable, but has effort been made to measure the signal of OUSA's effort, and determine whether satisfying any strategic plan goals is purely coincidental?
Sep 30, 2011 3:11 PM #

I have generally renewed OUSA membership when I get reminded, and I don't think I knew online was an option. How does one find these things out?

The start of the most recent episode of the office reminded me of OUSA.

CHARLIE-B:
As Eddie says (and I agree): I was a bit surprised by the up +22% number too, but given the variations in club's spring/summer/fall schedules I am inclined to put more emphasis on the annual numbers rather than the 6mo numbers in this case. Same for A-meets. Could have been a warm, sunny spring for example, or just happen to have a few extra meets.

So I think folks are generally hesitant to crow over early numbers. And then there is the possibility that some will still believe that satisfying any strategic plan goals is purely coincidental.

Regarding trying to influence starts and memberships...

All,

Thanks for your comments in the last few hours (I have received a lot
privately). Glad that so many of you are excited! Here are answers to
questions that have come across my desk.

HOW ARE WE GOING TO MEASURE...We will measure by raw numbers. For
starts there will be two classes: clubs over and under 60 members.

DO I HAVE TO FILL OUT SPECAIL FORMS...Absolutely not. We will include
this as part of the rechartering info. Additional paperwork is not good
for the soul.

OUSA MEMBERS...New members only will be counted, not renewals or lapsed
members that come back.

HOW IS THIS FUNDED...This is being funded by the major gift we received
in the spring. The goals of that gift were to drive starts and OUSA
membership.

I MISSED THE ORIGINAL FLYER....Copy attached.

MY CLUB LEADERS NEED A COPY...I just club emails out. If your
leadership did not get one, have them send me an email with their
address.

Later

All,

If you go on-line today you can find a the clubs and races nearest you
(or where you are heading on vacation). Just go to
www.orienteeringusa.org and click on "Come Try Orienteering". That will
then give you a variety of options to get to the clubs, their event
calendars and the permanent courses nearest to you.

Thanks to the Web Committee, and especially Pat Dunlavey, for this
important upgrade to the website.

If you are in New York today, run well. See you all tomorrow in
Rochester at the convention.

Sincerely,
Glen

There may be differing opinions on the efficacy of these efforts, or on the methods used to measure the same, but from what I can tell, there is an earnest effort being made.

If you agree with any of these initiatives, please feel free to help.

If you have better ideas, please share them. In doing so, it would be great if you could also consider the resources necessary to execute them and where these resources could be found.

I'm particularly interested in Non-starts Revenue - not the focus of this thread - and I know that at least some folks reading this know how to help. If this is you, please get in touch.

Thanks!

Agreed, Charlie, there are a lot of initiatives. Some may bear fruit, others not. I'm all in favor of the effort.

But, as I was talking about here, there is a distinct lack of regular ongoing communication about what is happening, both at the federation level and at the club level. As if we have all been given our directions and then told to report back in a year and we'll see how we did. Maybe we'll have some successes. But I think we'd have a lot more successes, with very little extra effort, if there was lots of communication about all of these initiatives -- successes, failures, even some trash talking. Right now there's just about none.

Any ad campaign, or marketing plan, or whatever you want to call it, depends on repetition of the message. Tell the story again and again and again. Would a car company announce a new model, and then sit quietly for a year and then see how many it had sold? Glen's e-mails reported on lots of things going on, but he needs to keep hammering the message.

You're on the Board. Don't you think we could do a lot better in this regard?
Oct 2, 2011 12:25 AM #
CHARLIE-B:
Yes, I'm on the Board, but I'm new. I've never met 7 of the other board members and I have never met Glen. By the way, all of these emails were on ClubNet and before I was on the board. I can see no discussion of any of these emails on ClubNet.

I am sure we can do a lot better at many things, but unsure as to what would have to be neglected as a result. My own impression is that many folks in the O community are operating at the limit of their bandwidth, whatever that may be. For Glen's part, he isn't exactly in control of setting his own priorities.

From my own experience, Glen has been extremely helpful with regard to my assigned task on the board. He has been very organized and efficient and is approaching things in a well-structured and logical way. If he is working with all the board members in their assigned tasks in a similar fashion, then he is a very busy man!

Regarding the message, I'm just not sure. I do know that at home we use a DVR and never watch live TV any more, with the express desire to never watch any TV commercials. On the other hand, when we are in the market for a car, we certainly want to be able to look up the info we need to help make a decision.

Thanks for your insights and suggestions.
