Discussion: An update

in: Sprint the Golden Gate (Nov 18–20, 2011 - San Francisco, CA, US)

We apologize for lack of updates so far... four out of five venues are very close to being permitted, the fifth one is still in the works, multiple jurisdictions. We will post info that amounts to Bulletin 2/3 shortly, and open the registration afterwards, with a reasonable early-deadline period.

Two questions:

1) Do we have an event hotel yet?

2) Anyone interested in rideshare/roomshare?

I'll be arriving from Seattle on Friday afternoon/evening, and departing either Sunday evening or Monday.

We expect to make progress on the event hotel in early October. November is pretty much a dead season in this city, so deals are plentiful.

Thanks! One reason I was asking about the hotel was if the event would be easily possible without needing a Buick car. I won't be packing weekend-only light, though, as I'm flying out to Kansas for another week.

It can be done. It's not an easy transit from Stage 2 to Stage 3, but between the rest of them and the accommodations/social places, it is reasonable. If you need to catch an early afternoon flight on Sunday out of SFO, I think a cab is your only option, but it isn't that much.

I was thinking of catching a red-eye from SFO to MCI, so that gives me plenty of time to hang out and socialize and/or see the sights before I head home.

We are still working on the event hotel. It will be either in the Civic Center area, or in Union Square—close to transit. And event webpage updates will happen, most likely this weekend—nothing major has changed, the venues are still the same, but there have been staff changes and we are ready to release more exact venue/parking directions.

The registration is open. It is far from what one would expect of Get Lost!!. We are using this service as a crutch, and have full intention to keep registrations in-house. Unfortunately there is no manpower currently available to adapt our team system to individual registrations, and we plan to do this before our next individual event.

Quirks of this particular provider are that discounts are not figured out automatically, and that you have to enter certain information twice. Again we are very sorry about this. We appreciate your understanding. Please report all bugs or unexpected behavior to me promptly.

The earliest registration cutoff has been moved one week later to 17 October.

The website has been updated with hopefully all details that are necessary at this stage. The hotel is taking reservations and registration is functioning. Many thanks to Sports Basement for providing room for packet pickup, snacks, and a 10% discount on everything in the store. See you in San Francisco in five weeks!!

Sweet, thanks.

Also, since I'm a design junkie, do you have any additional info about the commemorative t shirt?
Oct 13, 2011 12:37 AM #
Tundra/Desert:
Sadly not yet—our designer is busy with the rogaine shirt and will probably get to the Sprints shirt next week. It will be a panelized, single-color o21e shirt with sublimation printing. If you have design suggestions, they are quite welcome!

What's parking like at the event hotel?

As for t-shirt designs... lots of animals, ha!

"Overnight parking is on a limited first come first serve basis on space availability only. Parking is $35.00 plus tax with in and out privileges."

You can also park in a number of nearby lots. The one by Fox Building where I used to live (two blocks from the hotel) is either $5 or $6 for overnight. It is not particularly secure. You may also be able to find street parking within a couple blocks. It's free.

Vlad, online registration website seems to be getting hung up - I'm being patient! Any suggestions?
Oct 13, 2011 2:03 PM #
Tundra/Desert:
I can try to debug it if you describe "hung up". As I said, we are terribly sorry that we haven't been able to bring you a decent registration experience this time, this service is not up to our standards and we are using it as a crutch. But the help line people have been very helpful so far.

For those of us who are ranked on both Red and Blue, can we decide which stage 1 will count towards?
Oct 13, 2011 3:01 PM #
Tundra/Desert:
Indeed—there is a field in the reg form on the second page into which you type in your desired Orienteering USA course for rankings.

Bill—as much as this doesn't sound right, the first thing that comes to my mind is trying a different browser? I tried with the most recent Opera and Firefox, and IE 8. Some JavaScript on the reg page appears to hang indeed but that did not impede the overall functionality in my tests, I just had to type things in manually/twice.

Also please let me know if the hotel booking goes smoothly—the rate should be $85.00 plus SF tax. They said the front desk should be able to handle the booking if you mention Get Lost!!. The name of the salesperson to mention (if needed) is Khaled.

Vlad, thanks- currently using Firefox and I'm getting timed out as it tries to connect to next step of process (otherwise my LAN / internet connection is running fast). Found I had to retype gender /DOB but not a big deal - just wont go to payment now. Might just start over. Will try hotel momentarily. Cheers

Hi guys!
Christine and I are on trip around the world and will take part at this event in San Francisco. We would like to stay at the hotel, but a room for as alone is a bit too expensive. are ther two other persons who would like to stay with us in a room with two double beds or has in his room two vacancies?
Please let us know as soon as possible at biitzimmermann@gmx.ch.
Otherwise we will look at a hostel or something else.
see you soon in sf

Just registered fine via Firefox (3.6.24, yes old)

Thanks Wyatt!! It came through fine. There have been semi-major changes in venues, and I will post updates as soon as I have hard permits in hand. (Stages One/WRE and Five unaffected, others have been shuffled around.) Will also post the list of entrants (about 16 in each of the Open and Masters brackets as of now).

Vlad thanks. BTW hotel has worked out just fine and I'm bringing a spectator. Looking forward to seeing entrant list in anticipation of another epic CSU - DVOA showdown (please!) :-)

We will have more info over the weekend about the venue changes. But for now, enjoy, and get your tickets and entry in if you haven't yet!

I wish I could make it. I highly endorse the experience for anyone on the fence.
