Discussion: No, wait, Daze 5 Results Are Ready After All!

Daze 5, Remarkable Flats map (with some new mapping)--the incredible Rocky Mountain Goat, 13.4 kms, 27 posts, some climb but not much, many free range cattle bearing the dreaded "double diamond" brand, pleasant temps afforded by partially overcasting clouds for much of the race.

When Graham Baird crossed the road on the way to the final control with just 200m left to go to the finish, the race seemed certain to go his way as no other racers were within sight. And so it went. And when the next runner--Andrei Karpov--crossed the road, again it seemed certain that he would be the next to finish, as no other runners were in sight. However a miss on the last control cost Andrei 6 places; orienteering can be such a humbling sport. Andrei, we can all sypathize with you because we've all been there before (or, in some cases, been there several times)!

One person, while looking over the results list and noting the unusual number of ties, was heard reprising the infamous question first posed by the noted philosopher James Marshall Hendrix: "Is this love, or is this just confusion?" Good question!

Times were fast and fun because--let's face it--Remarkable Flats is a fast and fun place. You could orienteer there for a week straight and the worst thing that might happen is you could get a blister on your little finger.

Every bit as nice as it was unexpected was to get a few visitors from far, far away. Martin and Roland from Switzerland were every bit as friendly as you would guess folks from the land of cow bells and rivella would be. Another pleasant surprise was the reappearance of Rich Kelly, who had not been seen in orienteering connections for a while.

Roland and Martin consult each other on the likeliest locations for finding a really big rattlesnake, after the One Cowboy Relay.

Quite interesting is that before the boys leapt up to strike a pose on the rock, the rock was as level as the Kansas prairie. Just goes to show that JP is a heavier hitter than you might guess. (from left to right: JP Ingebrigtsen, Craig Murray, and Graham Baird)

Lastly through a hogshead of real fire! In this way Mr. K will challenge the world.

Laramie Daze was a blast! Definitely worth hobbling around on a sprained ankle...

More photos from the One Cowboy Relay and the Rocky Mountain Goat are posted at RMOC's Facebook page.

You could get a blister on your thumb, you know...
(And the Kansas prairie is, of course, about 3000 feet higher on one end than the other.)
Great to see Craig doing so well!

Nice work, Mikell - another great opportunity on yet another Army-inspired cross country drive. Your timing, as always, is impeccable. We hope to make the full event one of these days.

Thanks to all for the pictures and the fun! (To include the fabulous shots of me wandering around with scale issues just within the control circle, nice!)
