Discussion: Lodging at Blue Mountain

in: US Team Trials for WOC '11 (May 28–30, 2011 - Peekskill, NY, US)

The lodging at Blue Mountain is still very much available for all that are interested. There are 7 beds available in the men's dorm and 8 in the ladies' dorm. We need at least 18 participates to break even on the cost of the lodge for the weekend and we are 3 short at this point. I had hoped that we would fill the lodge as it would help with the expenses for the meet and/or give the Team some extra funds for WOC. Also there are two people on my list that Sam gave me that have not contacted me there intentions yet. Andy Strat and Alison Campbell please get in contact with me. So if you are coming to the team trials and want to stay at the lodge please contact me. It is $50 for 3 nights and you will never get a motel/hotel on a holiday weekend for that kind of money.
You would be lucky to get one night for $50. So please let me know that you are interested in staying at the lodge. Also if you are thinking that you will camp at Blue Mountain in a tent or camper forget it. It is not allowed. As far as I know the closest campgrounds is over in Harriman State park and if you don't have a reservation by now you could have a problem as it is a holiday weekend and everyone loves to come out of the city for a weekend in the woods and to party at the campgrounds.

Waiting to hear from you!

Janet

LODGING at Blue Mountain PROBABLY CANCELED

I just spoke with Blue Mtn Superintendent Tino Martin, who informed me that, due to an "infrastructure problem" all Trail Lodge reservations have been suspended. While it is possible that repairs will be complete by Memorial Day weekend, he could not guarantee it.

He will contact me tomorrow about possible alternatives. He mentioned Croton Point Park and Mountain Lakes Camp -- neither of which have been O-mapped (yet).

Please note that this does NOT effect the Long and Middle diatance orienteering events (Team Trials / spectator courses) that will take place at Blue Mountain on May 29 & 30, respectively.

WOW! when did they find this out??? Did you call them or did they call you? For me this really changes things. As a volunteer, I cannot afford the cost of a hotel for the weekend. I hope that they get it fixed as I have a feeling that is could effect some of the people coming as spectators/ volunteers. Keep us posted.

@orienteeringmom: Tino called my home phone and left a voicemail, on Wednesday -- when I was still in Taiwan. He said that some kind of notice might have been mailed to me or you; my mail is still being held at the post office, so I have not seen anything yet. Will let you know more when I know more.

There is Ward Pound Ridge Reservation in Cross River, not far. Tent sites/lean-to's & likely popular that weekend.

There is better news...

Tino (Blue Mtn Superintendent) is close to arranging the use of one of the Croton Point Park lodges as a substitute. It has a commercial kitchen and full baths with showers. However, since the park has cabins -- all but one of which are already reserved -- it is not set up for sleeping and does not have cots.

What it does have, however, is a large common room (with a fireplace) that we could use as a co-ed dormitory. While air mattresses would be recommended, it is also possible that the cots from Blue Mtn will be brought there for our use.

Croton Point Park is a 15 min drive south of Peekskill, off Route 9 (a freeway in this area). I'm told it has terrific views of the Hudson. Also, it is closer to SUNY Purchase than the Blue Mtn lodge is.

On the other hand, the Blue Mtn lodge might be repaired in time.

Stay tuned...

It's also closer to Indian Point.

I'm not sure Indian Point will be repaired in time.

That's great news Guy, I hope that they are willing to cut us a break on the cost for this inconvenience. They don't need to know that is it closer to our saturday event. Also with one big room for sleeping it means we all go to bed at the same time or go somewhere else so that those than want to go to bed early can without being disturbed. Like, hopefully they will forget the additional charge for Monday after 11AM check-out so that those that want to shower and clean up before traveling can.

Keep us posted you are doing a good job with this problem.

In terms of pure distance, Blue Mountain is closer to Indian Point than Croton Point. However, the former is more sheltered from it than the latter.

Yes but the Strontium 90 that has been leaking from the plant for years into the groundwater is closer to the drinking water wells for Blue Mountain than for Croton

90 is my favorite isotope of strontium!

Strontium 90 was the name of a short-lived 1977 British band with members Mike Howlett (bass, vocals), Sting (bass, vocals), Stewart Copeland (drums), and Andy Summers (guitar). The band is most notable for introducing Summers to Sting and Copeland, as this trio would go on to massive success as The Police.

OK, Guys there seems to be an inside joke here that I have no idea what you are talking about. Could someone let me know what it has to do with a place to stay for the team trials.

@orienteeringmom: Indian Point is a troublesome nuclear power plant on the Hudson River near Peekskill. There's a spot on Route 9 southbound, near the Welcher Ave (Blue Mtn) exit, where the containment building domes appear prominently.

Guy, that'd be the Welcher Ave (Indian Point) exit.

this from wiki: "On January 7, 2010, NRC inspectors reported that an estimated 600,000 gallons of mildly radioactive steam was intentionally vented after an automatic shutdown of Unit 2. The levels of tritium in the steam were below those allowable by NRC safety standards."

I am not sleeping within 30 miles of this place.

Straight line distance from Indian point to Bethel: 29 miles. :-o

well my house is 1 mile beyond the range of the evacuation sirens. If I see people pouring out of the area, I will run first and ask questions later.

Do you know what you get when you mix strontium 90 with methane?

That's right. Methanized strontium 90.

Based on conversations with Tino Martin (Blue Mtn Super), it now appears to be a certainty that Croton Point Park's Senasqua Lodge will be the Team Trials cheap lodging alternative.

The Blue Mtn Trailside Lodge would have been excellent, location-wise, especially for those who could park it on Saturday evening and then walk short distances to the event center / arena for the Long and Middle. In order to compensate somewhat for the inconvenience, Tino said that he will do the following:

1) Move cots from Blue Mtn to Croton Point; he would like to only move enough for the number signed up to stay there, so signing up early (still with Janet) will assure you a cot. I will find out when he needs that number.

2) Waive parking fees at Blue Mtn by means of a password to be used only by Croton Point lodgers. Croton Point fees are automatically waived for people staying there.

3) Gates limit vehicular access to the lodge and camping areas at Croton Point; so all lodgers with cars will either be issued passes, or one of the gates will be left open at certain times.

He also told me that the Hudson River views from Senasqua Lodge are outstanding. Not sure if they include a view of Indian Point, though. ;-)

orienteeringmom:
Ok Guy, this is better than nothing( I have no idea where Croton Point is; that information would be helpful for those of us who are staying there)

1) Cost? Are they still going to charge us the same amount??

2) Kitchen, when you say commercial kitchen, same type of equipment as Blue Mtn.? Large stove, 2 ovens, grill, large refrig., some cooking equipment?

3) If we are sleeping in the common room are there still going to be tables and bench(chairs) available for eating at and other things?

4) Charcoal grill outside for cooking out?

Don't get me wrong Guy, I'm ok with this arrangement but since I'm in charge I need to know what is available and what to expect so that I can make sure that all staying there are well informed on what to expect as well.

Note: I'm not concerned about Indian Point, I live everyday in the limit of Limmerick, PA nuclear Power plant. I hear the monthly tests of the warning sirens. Just part of live these days.

On this new information from Guy, here is an update for those still interested in lodgings. There are 12 cots still available for the weekend. Also I need payment or arrangement for payment from 4 persons already signed up. Please get in touch with me. Also those needing transportation contact me and I will go over the list of people using the lodgings and help you arrange transportation if you need it.

Janet Porter

Note: I will be leaving PA around 2PM on that friday and hope to arrive up there by 5PM; any one needing to arrive before me let me know so that we can make sure you can get into the lodge.
