Umm, yeah. It might be wise to be a bit suspicious about the wisdom of running around Camden, NJ, 2380 violent crimes per 100,000 residents in 2009. And you picked a day two weeks after they just laid off half their police due to budget issues.

The church and deli mentioned in the apparently-random lunchtime killing that begins the following (very good) article are about 1km south of where you turned around.

I run through some neighborhoods in Rochester that many might think are on the unsafe side, and I've never had any incidents or anything that made me feel personally threatened or even uncomfortable. I think Mike does that once in a while, also.

I'm guessing that might give people like Mike or me an unwarranted sense of security when running in an unfamiliar town, that we're used to not-so-nice neighborhoods and survive them fine in Rochester, so why should it be a problem in other places ... without realizing that certain areas of other cities are probably significantly less safe than what we're used to in Rochester. Mike's experience will make me more aware of my route choices when running in unfamiliar territory.
