Georgia Orienteering Club is cancelling the Georgia Navigator Cup &
Southeast Interscholastic Championships. Due to the winter storm, the club must cancel the event. Yesterday, we found out that due to downed trees and loss of power the park is closed. Today the course setter called and said the forest is too dangerous for orienteering. The weather reports are not encouraging. Ice is on the roads and the weather reports are it won't be until Saturday before temperatures get up enough to melt the ice.

We hope to reschedule if we can. Meanwhile we will work up what we
have received for registrations and let you know when we can settle up those that have already paid.

That's unfortunate; but, we all should remember—safety first. I'm confident the Event Director made the correct decision, and I think the same decision should have been made upon a number of occasions in recent memory. Too often we choose to march along, neglecting the perils.

If you have reservations, motel or park cabins, call them to cancel
now. Many motels are refunding and the reservations for Georgia Parks says
call the park to get your cabin reservation canceled. They will be able to
get a better refund. The park number is on your reservation confirmation.
The Reservation people gave me 706-213-2045. The park superintendent is
Keith Whitaker, his email keith.whitaker@dnr.state.ga.us.

This really stinks! My team and I have really been looking foward to this competition since it will probally be the biggest we (would have) competed in this year. Real bummer, wish this could have been prevented, although I know it can't.

Discusted that this really happened two days before we were leaving.

Thanks for the timely notification given how recent the storm was. It takes some dedication to get out there in the middle of the week when the roads are probably still bad, and then make the hard call, and notify everyone promptly.

GNC is still my one of my favorite meets, and I think this will be only the second one I've missed. Looking forward to a reschedule or next year.

Winter weather is a crap shoot even in Georgia. I went to a GNC in '05 or so, west of Atlanta. The following weekend was a paralyzing ice storm.

Tell me about it. I flew into ATL Sunday evening just as the snow started & my departing flight scheduled just 45 minutes later was cancelled. I'd still be there now (Tuesday evening) if I had depended on the airline's rebooking.

Just checked. 49 hours after I was originally scheduled to leave ATL, my rebooked flight is now in the air. Glad I didn't wait around for it!
