Just kidding :-) Looks like you held your pace pretty well and agree that inserting some speed workouts into your regimen would yield benefits on the endurance base.
My best effort, a distance of just over 8-1/2 miles in the 12:00 run, must have occurred in the first year of the Carter administration. I remember being pretty happy with the performance as it was not far off the pace of my cross-country friends, although it was enough of an improvement over my prior efforts that I was always suspicious that the gym teacher may have been distracted and stopped the run a bit later than intended. Still, I had results better than 2 miles consistently in high school with just the training I received as a member of the soccer and wrestling teams. Now I can only dream of results like that even with fairly consistent dedication to running over the past few months.
Clearly strength is your asset and a good attribute for orienteering!
Your reference to Presidents got me thinking about my school and training days in English speaking parts of the world, when the only real heads of state to remember were Queen Elizabeth II - 50 plus years now!- sundry Governor's General (can't remember) and the Duke of Edinburgh who sponsored an outdoor education award system - which I remember extremely well!
