I thought that the coupling between your legs and your upper body through your core is necessary to apply the torque needed to rotate your legs through a stride, or alternatively to maintain constant angular momentum.

That makes sense- don't think my arm motions were significant alone to make me that sore! More back strength needed!

(At first though, I thought you were referencing this show, a British TV show I liked, although it doesn't make any sense that you would have known it...)
