That's true, but I was never able to persuade her that we in fact were not gay, so it would have seemed a misplaced remark to suggest to her that there was nothing wrong with our lifestyle.
Apparently Brendan's companions are often misidentified as gay, e.g. both this episode and Clem's misfortunes waiting for Brendan at the Sheepfold in the Middlesex Fells.
I wouldn't go so far as to call them misfortunes. Maybe they were misfortunes for the others involved if they liked me as much as they subtly intimated.
