The results and the links to the 2003 - 2008 HHs are posted at the

Thanks for the results.

Are there any results from prior to 2007 or so? (I can't get the 2006 link to work on this page.) I know I ran other Highlanders, but not any recent ones.

here are some that I found:

Awesome! Thanks. I have confirmed that in the results you provided, PG has a nice 3 to 1 record vs. me.

Now, I just need 2006. I think I got him there...

These results all seem to be helping confirm that this year's Highlander was the wussiest one ever, and 2003 was the toughest yet. (I think this year definitely had the highest fraction of trail running of any HH course I've seen.)
Oct 14, 2009 1:41 AM #
PG:
Make that 3-2 when you add in 2006.

Guess I will just have to skip futures editions to preserve my lead.
Oct 14, 2009 1:59 AM #
j-man:
Well, that did occur to me, but who knows how many times our trajectories will intersect? Like if I run this in 10 years, you might buttress your record.

As long as it's the Highlander Trail-O, then I suppose I have a chance.

Well, sort of. I guess if I don't show up I lose by default. And you know I won't be there for that one...

In 2003 we didn't bother having a trail run, as far as I recall. A course for Russians, by Russians.
Oct 14, 2009 2:43 AM #
j-man:
That's right. No wussy trail run for Russians.
Oct 14, 2009 2:21 PM #
jjcote:
No trail run in 2001 (designed by Jon Nash) nor 2003 (designed by Alexei), and 2006 didn't exactly have a trail run, though the first section used a highlighted route on a B&W map. Winning time was fastest this year, with the winning per-km time more than a minute better than the previous best. The top four this year were all faster than the previous best time. Prior to this year, the candidates for wussiest were 2000, 2004, and 2006 (2000 may have been even wussier than 2009). 2003 was indeed probably the toughest, with 2005 in second place. 1999 was also tough as evidenced by the stats, but that one is in a special category due to the rain.

What we have here is something resembling the even-odd Star Trek movie dichotomy...

How come no splits for Craig Weber, and in the HVO splits list, Levine and Onkst are both listed as 55th, but Sturtevant is 56th?
Oct 14, 2009 4:20 PM #
piutepro:
Craig has been placed in the Lowlander by the computer, because he switched from LL to HH. David O. punched after David L. at the Go control, which decided about the order in the results. If you look at this last version of the results, here I manually adjusted things.

I am adding results of previous years, J-J sent me 2004, so I have everything from 2003 - 2009. I am working on the previous years, but I usually need to improve the format before I post and link.

Thanks Daniel! It would be great to have all the Highlander results archived in the same place. (Also, some sort of lifetime point system, like in the Billygoat?)
Oct 14, 2009 7:14 PM #
GlenT:
There is a lifetime point system for the Highlander, based on how many you've completed and how many people you've finished ahead of (the way the bib numbers were assigned at HH XIV).

This year's course was 25.639 km, using 0CAD to measure on the Surebridge map, and measurements on a scan of the original Silvermine map (since I'm a little wary of the inkjet prints we ran on for the last section). The breakdown is:
Surebridge: 6.73 km
trail run: 6.505 km
Fingerboard: 5.576 km
Tiorati Circle: 6.828 km

Seems like this was probably one of the easier Highlanders, if not the easiest. Certainly the winning time was the fastest (more than a minute per km faster than any previous Highlander!), but that's in part an effect of the presence of a certain French ringer. Still, the first four (Gueorgiou, Hawkins, Bourrin, and McGrath) were faster than any previous Highlander time. Average time was the second-fastest, and median time was third-fastest, though these may have been influenced by a higher than typical attendance by some of the better orienteers around, thanks to the fact that there was a training camp in Harriman in the days preceding. DNF rate was the lowest in quite some time. For the usual suspects, it was right in the middle, which probably also means it was on the easy side, considering the fact that we're slowing down as we age. Bob Bullions probably maintains his title of the oldest Highlander, now at age 66, though Eric Smith was born the same year, so I have to check his birthdate, but since Bob was born in early January, I'm guessing he's older. In fact, only one person born before them (Judy Dickinson) has ever finished a Highlander, and she hasn't done so since 1997.

Here is the point list before HH 14. I include it in the HH page later. AP doesn't allow tabs, looks messy. The second last number is the number of starts and the last number are the points.

First criterion for the ranking is the number of finishes, second is "points", where you basically get a point for everybody who finishes after you, and a half-point for everybody who DNFs.

No, I am not trying to add the longest post to AP ever. Just happened to be the fastest thing to do, instead of making a file and linking it.

For the record, Dave Onkst and I "tried" to tie. As documented on one of the YouTube videos, however, he punched before me, not the other way around.

And, despite my terrible time (I hurt my knee on the way to #1), I agree that this was among the easier Highlanders. I suspect that it comes down to the fact that the long legs gave lots of dead running time as much as anything else.

The most painful part of this year's race was the mental anguish of having to run so far on a trail through the finest piece of orienteering terrain on the continent. :)

I thought that Surebridge was the finest piece of orienteering terrain in the world??

Eddie, which route did you take to #1 and from #3 to #4? The trail options are not necessarily the fastest ones, that was part of the trick... Wyatt was 2:15 faster than you from the start to #1, going up to the saddle west of the line and then down the reentrant.

On 3 - 4 I think the eastern route around the mountain, crossing the stream up to the bottle cap trail be the fastest for a good navigator. Less climb than the western route.

I was referring only to the trail run itself. I thought the rest of the orienteering was just fine - especially leg 4 (I went exactly the way you described - alone and very enjoyable). I ran leg 1 blind. Didn't even know where I was until about halfway there.

I don't object to the trail run in the Highlander. I think its a fine thing to have and I like the tradition of it even if there's no real reason for it. But its painful to run so long on a trail when there's god's gift to orienteers slipping past on both sides for so long. I can't attest to Surebridge being the best in the world - I certainly think it is. I know for sure its the best in N.A. It is such sweet terrain and so well mapped. It usually kicks my butt, but occasionally you get a good flow running through it and its simply bliss. Its a feast for the mind. Ahhhh...

@ feet: These results all seem to be helping confirm that this year's Highlander was the wussiest one ever, and 2003 was the toughest yet.

I got 4 last analyzed and last one is on a tough side GV-wise
2009 - 28400
2008 - 28800
2007 - 26800
2006 - 26900

Enjoy

@ piutepro: Do you have CSV data of the rest?

I have all Highlander times in a single spreadsheet, which I will be forwarding to piutepro as soon as I doublecheck a few things. Bear in mind that GVs across a span of years are a bit questionable, since people get older and slow down (or in some cases, get better). Looking at the times of the six people who have completed all of the Highlanders would probably lead you to think that the courses have been getting harder and harder, when in fact the people have just been steadily getting more decrepit.

As you might noticed I normalize to the "average" person, who supposedly is getting better with time (food, medicine etc)
so the GV would go lower with time..

On the other side, there is a negative trend related to more and more beginner people in the database in the recent years versus only elite people in the database in older years, which drives average person down.

Currently only data 2005+ is more or less stable, while scores back in time will be lower by as much as 15% (and corresponding GV lower) just because average recorded runner at that time was elite runner (given 50 points by definition...)
If I ever get all data from local clubs, we can fix that problem (I think data back to 2000 can be reasonably recuperated)

What sort of medicine are you thinking of? Can I get some? :)

O-scores:
No, neither me or you can get it (or it is going to be illegal)
But the fact that I'm slower than many of our M60+ is a medicine... or name it...
