Truely. It rattled and Dave almost stepped on it but was able to slow down in time. At night he almost stepped on a second snake but that may just have been a black snake.
Interesting - on our Suffern to Bear Mountain run on Monday we saw first a big black snake (Bernie said it is his usual spot, and 30 minutes later a young rattler.
I nearly stepped on two different large (5-6 ft.) black snakes on the climb to #73. Later I almost tripped on a box turtle.
Other than the snakes, there seemed to be a general lack of wildlife there. The first squirrel didn't appear until 18 hours in. The black snake was around #43.
