Hilary:
We just got Orienteering Today and there is an awesome photo of the JWOC area across a broad open paddocky gully with pine trees scattered on the edges and a fantastic looking mountain in the distance and a lake in the foreground.This picture makes it look open and fast?!....at least in this broad gully.

Hilary, surely you know the first rule of event organising.... never publish photographs of the green or close contour areas in your event terrain. ;-}

There were a couple of areas like this when we trained for JWOC 1993, but most competition areas were steep with soft ground and hard going.

Thus reiterating the first rule....

Yes we know it will be steep and slow going only have to look at the course lengths for the long distance......7.6km for the mens course!

i dont understand that.
last year we ran 10.5k with 300 metres climb in half metre long grass. this year the terrain looks more runnable with more tracks, 7.6k 400m climb. 2k less doesnt seem like a worthy trade off for 100m extra climb
