I'm glad you liked the course. I also failed to notice the 1:7500 scale until towards the end of the day Saturday.

Yes, there were 3 pairs of controls that were visible from another control. I should have eliminated the 15th control completely, and moved the 19th control north east. (See RouteGadget)

Actually, on #26, the optimum route was supposed to be north on the flat route. But, when Pat Meehan + me + 3 other juniors did the red course together, Sam Gordon decided to take the lower route, and he beat the rest of us by over 30 seconds. I think he was slightly less tired than the rest of us though.

Gerald,

Do you almost always take a direct route when orienteering?

15th on red would probably be ok if it's placed on the N side of the rootstock. I thought 19th was fine. I spotted 22 on the way there, which helped verify my location, but I had to literally get to the feature (dot knoll) before seeing the control. Because this is more of a problem if other courses go from 19 to 22 (or vice versa).

For 26, distance wise it's much shorter to go right. Perhaps there's not enough distance between the controls to make the left (flat) route faster? Regardless, it was a good route choice problem to have to solve at the end of a course.

Steve,
I guess it depends on the leg, terrain, vegetation etc. In general I try to take direct routes whenever visibility and runnability is good, especially on shorter courses/legs. On a really long leg, a more circuitous route involving more trails/easy navigation is usually my choice.
Unless it's really steep and unnecessary, I tend not to think too much about doing extra climb. But this choice is more related to physical fitness.
