The regular registration ends at midnight on October 1.

This year's race will have three 1:10,000 maps with a trail run. For the first time we offer the Lowlander, which includes the first part of the Highlander. The course includes some of the best orienteering areas in Harriman.

The assembly area and details will be posted midweek.

Thanks for having 1:10000 maps! :-)

Bernard:
1:7500 would be nice for some of that terrain.
Sep 29, 2008 8:58 PM #
JanetT:
Well, yeah. :-)

But I'm just glad they won't be 1:15000....

Is location of the start is still uknown at this point? Would be nice to at least know that piece of info for those who are trying to figure out ways to get there.

The assembly is at Kanawauke Parking off Rte 106 from Kanawauke Circle (do not try to approach it from Tuxedo, Rte. 106 is closed at the bridge) in Harriman. We get to the actual start via car pooling, so plan for plenty of time to get ready and get to the start.

That's quite a big hint, really...
Oct 2, 2008 2:01 PM #
Bernard:
how many people are signed up so far?
Oct 2, 2008 4:07 PM #
piutepro:
73 Highlanders & 13 Lowlanders.

As far as hints go, you must know that I know but you don't know, of course you know some, but considering the uncertainty of knowing, let's say, well, you might be correct but I assume now nobody is going to go out and streamer his way through the woods on certain known courses in Harriman and, well enough of the unknown.

So it is true then...

People, WHAT are you talking about?
Oct 3, 2008 12:34 AM #
piutepro:
We are talking about the unknown. And about truth, yes it is true, we will use maps during the Highlander. They were printed today.

I'm with barb...

Where were you in 1993?....

(I wonder how far off we are here.)

SV:
And I'm with barb and Wyatt...

Besides:
1. Why the HVO website front page (http://hvo.us.orienteering.org/) doesn't have any info about this event and the top right info is not updated? A little link would be very helpful.
2. Why the brownpaper website (http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/44183) promises that "Location will be announced on the web site and by e-mail in the week before the event." ?
The promised email never arrived and "the website" ( if it is not specified it is obvious it should be the same one) was never updated ?

all the info you need is 9 lines above. the email said the same thing.

The Brownpaper website is a generic online ticket-buying site. It also says I have to go to the "will call" window & show ID to get my ticket. It obviously isn't set up for this sort of event, but HVO has used it in the past & it works just fine.
The info above in this thread will get you to where you need to go & when.

Thanks to HVO and all volunteers involved in putting on the Highlander (with Lowlander option) and preparing post-race food. Though a rainy start, by mid-afternoon the sun came out and the temperature warmed. I for one got more exercise than typical on an excellent map.

I posted my routes on my log entry for today (Monday), also a link to the winning routes for the classic in 1993.

Congratulations to the many finishers of the rerun of the classic WOC 1993 course. It is a beautiful course and I can only imagine how hard it would have been if we had had an interval start instead of the mass start. Seems the Lowlander was a welcome addition to the race menu, so we might see how we can keep this part going, too.

I hope to come up with an equally wild idea for next year, which will be Highlander 14, maybe probably on October 4, 2009 ( correction: See Paul's remark below, we might have to move the HH. I assumed nobody would ever pick "our" HH weekend date. Not.)

Results and splits are here.

Daniel, not sure how you are going to match yesterday's course, it was just great.

If UNO holds it's 'A' Meet on 10/3-4 next year, Highlander 14 could be back on its traditional 10/11 date on Columbus weekend. Unfortunately for some, this would put it up again the WMOC in Australia. We're always open for suggestions as to when it should be scheduled.
Oct 7, 2008 11:26 AM #
Joe:
I chose to skip WMOC because of the potential conflict with the Highlander.
