My sister must be one of the people you pass. She commutes from Bethesda to Georgetown. She always complains to me that she is the slowest person on the trail and asks for tips on going faster. Last time I put some air in her tires:)
There are people of all speeds on the trail. There is a sort of illusion of being the slowest too. If others travel at your speed, you're not going to see them. It's only people going faster or very much slower that one will cross paths with. Your sister could probably recognize me if she saw me. I'm one of the few who ride with a low rider front panier. It's green and I usually only use one.
I heard that the trail we ride is the 3rd most popular cycling commuting route in the country. It's really very convenient paralleling the busiest travel direction for car traffic. I get to work about as fast by bicycle as I do by metro rail and much quicker than I think it takes people to do by car. Having a metro rail line parallel it is a nice alternate too.
once my sister had an article w/ pic written about her as a bike commuter, and she said after that everyone on the trail recognized her. sounds like a community of sorts! I will tell her to give a wave to the guy w/ green panier!
It is a community. I often recognize some that I've seen before so I probably have seen your sister. My schedule when I ride these days is being on the trail roughly between 7:50am and 8:30am.
