Don't count yourself out. Maybe you'll never run as fast as they did this weekend, but when we're all on Brown, it's hard to know who will be running fastest then.
I just got a email from Mark, apparently he crashed on the exact same chain doing exactly what I was doing, reading ahead. And destroying his compass in the process. I don't even get to use the smashed compass as an excuse now.
I'm really impressed about not using a compass. I did a lot of no compass stuff when I was carrying stands, and it's so easy to get turned around here, especially when it's cloudy. I made some really embarrassing no-compass errors in the last few months.
I noticed a lot of chains hanging low---we'll have to add that to our list of stuff to check for future events. Along with "having a first aid kit" and "knowing where it is."
